The village of Shelburne Falls will once again celebrate the Deerfield River and the surrounding countryside with RiverFest next Saturday, June 12th. RiverFest is an annual tribute to the Deerfield River, and the role it plays in people’s lives and the ecosystem of western Massachusetts. Through entertaining, educational displays and demonstrations, a unique “Frog & Flower Parade” of schoolchildren (and adults), art, crafts, tag, book and plant sales, RiverFest helps people of all ages-area residents as well as visitors-gain a greater understanding of and appreciation for a rich natural resource.

There will be musicians and vendors throughout the village, children’s games, singing and storytelling, creative workshops leading up to the colorful “Frog & Flower Parade,” and much more, including:

  • Meet many of the birds of prey that soar through local skies
  • Learn how to identify edible wild plants
  • See specially chosen movies at Pothole Pictures (the fly-fishing film Rivers of a Lost Coast on Friday night and The Deerfield: A Working River on Saturday)
  • Participate in guided tours of the Gardner Falls power plant to gain a better understanding of how our river helps generate electricity
  • Try quiet-water rafting
  • Join a guided hike on one of the watershed’s scenic trails on Sunday
  • Ride an 1896 trolley car at the Trolly Museum
  • Enjoy Shelburne Falls’ many attractions, galleries and restaurants

Come Celebrate the Power of Water!
22nd Frog & Flower Parade And Workshop at Shelburne Falls Riverfest.
    June 12, 2010

Amazing Giant Puppets; Stilters; Musicians; Water Clowns; Sea Creatures & Frog, Flower n’ Fish puppets will be part of celebrating the “Power of Water” at this increasingly contagious annual event. Special River Angels will share cool facts about the river and lead you in adding river water to a Water Float! Alongside this, there is a free Parade Arts Workshop (10:30 to 12:30) open to children of ALL AGES (smile) for making Frogs, Flowers, & Fish puppets to carry in the PARADE!

The Parade’s Opening Circle is at 12:45 p.m. next to the above workshop in the John Malley Park on the Buckland side of the River. The Parade will then travel over the Iron Bridge and through downtown Shelburne Falls. It concludes in a sparkling
participatory Celebration (behind Arms Library), in which we will be honoring the Water – and all who came out to play for the day. Then there’s great live music by Sarah Pirtle and a continuation of other Festival Activities including music, theatre, vendors, Birds of Prey, Book and Tag sales, games, movies and more into the eve. And, in the morn, there also will be activities and entertainment including Happy
Dan the Music Man & Children’s Games.
