ABOUT CROOKED STILL

The musical prowess of this defiantly non-traditional bluegrass quintet is ever more apparent as they celebrate their 10th anniversary. They mix radically re-imagined traditional fare seamlessly alongside original compositions. For their fourth album, Some Strange Country, Crooked Still’s uses quasi-orchestral string arrangements and unique vocal distortion techniques to hone in on their unique refraction of roots music.

On Some Strange Country, Crooked Still has honed in on their unique refraction of roots music, recording their most personal, visionary album yet. “The music is not just ‘alternative bluegrass’ or whatever people used to call it,” fiddle player Brittany Haas remarks. “It’s at another level now: artful, but still grounded in that funky, string band thing.”

Actually, I’d never heard of Hilltown Families until I just read about this contest, but I’m really glad I now know about it.

I moved to the Berkshires 4 years ago and have spent most of my time getting settled and starting a new psychotherapy practice. Money is still tight. The only “luxuries” I allow myself are the concerts I enjoy at the Iron Horse, the Calvin, and Infinity Music Hall.

Now that I know about Hilltown Families, I’d like to get involved with them and perhaps become a one of their writers offering mental health education. It seems like a wonderful organization made up of a great group of folks.
