France Heady said,
May 5, 2009 at 5:57 am
Hello,
Sienna Wildfield emailed me saying that I might want to share about my camp with the Hilltown Families. This is a 6-week, 60 hours Engllish Language Detective Camp. The results were terrific for the campers 4 years ago when I last did this. Here is my press release information: English Language Detective Camp Has Kids Wanting More
After a 4-year hiatus, this successful English Language Detective Camp is back. Trainees from the.last camp were very enthused with more than half of them indicating that they would like to attend a follow up camp, and another four saying maybe. The composite average of 22 campers’ assessments given on the first and last Monday of camp showed a full grade improvement in reading and comprehension skills over the course of five weeks; the smallest gain was .6 of a year while two campers improved their scores three full grades. They learned a lot in a short time and had fun while doing it. How can that be?
Camp instructor, France Heady, is a teacher, a literacy specialist, the owner of Heady Headquarters for Language and Literacy, and a trainer for Riggs Institute’s The Writing and Spelling Road to Reading and Thinking: a Neurolinguistic Approach to Cognitive Development and English Literacy. Since 1996, she has used this program to help students of all ages (up to adult) and ability levels enhance their learning achievement in school or tutoring settings. For the camp, Heady incorporates fun activities to make the ‘language detective’ experience enjoyable. Success breeds success, and from the start of the program, trainees feel good about themselves as they grasp the daily, incremental lessons that actually demystify English. By the end of camp, the trainees are much more confident with all that they’ve learned. They feel ready to face the new school year.
In an email, Ruth B. of Feeding Hills wrote, “Suddenly she was reading like some other child… For the first time I could truly praise her for excellent reading! I’m thrilled and so is she.” Pat H. commented, “Lately, they have started writing letters to their friends for fun. They have been improving in following directions…”and Mrs. B. wrote, “Not just I, but his father has noticed an incredible improvement… The program, to me, is priceless and your methods of teaching more so.” A reluctant camper initially, Luke, from Westfield, told his mother that he could now easily figure out the words he was reading. He added that he would like to sign up again if an advanced camp were offered. That is music to parents’ ears.
There is no better gift that a parent or grandparent could give a child than to help him or her be on the road to academic success, which in turn leads to lifelong success. With the support from home, this 60-hour program does just that in a pleasurable way. “All my trainees are STARS, Striving To Achieve Remarkable Success. It is wonderful to see self-confidence grow as trainees’ literacy skills are solidified. I feel blessed to be able to make such a contribution.”
The 6-week camp is offered this summer in East Longmeadow, one session for grades 1 – 3, and another for grade 4 and up. Camp dates are from June 29 through August 7, 2009. For more information or for registration materials, please contact Heady at 413-534-1257 or email at HHLL8833@aol.com
Thank you, France Heady

Noah loved attending Frank’s camp last summer. His eyes lit up with wonder and enthusiasm every time he talked about his experience, and he told everyone he met, “It was great.” Frank provides a warm and accepting environment where modern children can reconnect with ancient traditions and earth skills. The children who attend his programs really do discover a sense of belonging to the earth, and in our fast paced world, this is truly a precious gift. Children also become grounded in their bodies through sensory activities, and gain a greater social awareness as they learn to work and play with others. I can’t say enough about Frank’s dedication and commitment to his work with children. My son loved every minute!

ART CAMPS IN NATURE AT ART BRIDGE IN SHELBURNE, MA
SPRING TO LIFE ELF & FAIRY CAMP April 21-24
SUMMER CAMPS
~ Aboriginal Dream Time Camp June 29-July 3
~ Spirit Art Powow Camp July 20-24 & July 27-31
~ India Journey Camp Aug 17-21
~ Puppet Theater Arts Camp Aug 24-28
Each week, we follow a new theme through adventures that connect our creativity with the spirit of nature. We build close friendships filled with compassionate communication and appreciation for each other’s gifts.
At the fire circle by the stream, we greet the day with singing, circle-dancing, drumming, & sharing. A new puppet show each morning carries us deeper into the realm of story, develops our theme, and foreshadows the day’s adventures. Children learn to join in, improvising new parts of the story together.
Our inter-arts, multi-sensory, full-body ways of making art develop each child’s capacity for creative concentration. This work deepens naturally during periods of free play in the studio’s fantasy village, theater, and sword play rooms, and in the meadow, forest, and gentle brook.
Story nest rest time, good food, and a relaxed flow, make days as cozy as they are exhilarating.
What we create – original songs, dances, silk banners, bark paintings, medicine wheel games, boomerangs, puppets, masks, and more – will continue to nourish creative play long after camp has ended.
Ages 4-12, together & in separate groups at times. Each week may be taken separately, though the two weeks in July are particularly wonderful when taken together.
Spring (4 days): sliding scale $140-$180. Summer (5 days): $200, $175 scholarship rate available
