This is the work of a gifted novelist.” – www.joshritter.com

ABOUT THE FELICE BROTHERS

What separates The Felices mud-stomping folk from that of their peers is their no-winking honesty the sense that these songs and the places and people they’re singing about aren’t literary devices but actual people doing their damnedest to rage against the growing darkness. – www.thefelicebrothers.com

ABOUT CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS

Carolina Chocolate Drops’ members met at the 2005 Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, N.C., and have spent the years since revitalizing and refreshing a glorious tradition of African-American string-band music. But this is no mere trio of nostalgia-miners: Members Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson are as likely to work with a progressive orchestra, or to reinvent Blu Cantrell’s R&B hit “Hit ‘Em Up Style,” as they are to draw on old-time jug-band favorites. — www.carolinachocolatedrops.com

ABOUT DAVID WAX MUSEUM

Anointed as Bostons Americana Artist of the Year (2010 Boston Music Awards), the David Wax Museum has been called pure, irresistible joy (Bob Boilen, NPR) and hailed by TIME.com for its virtuosic musical skill and virtuous harmonies. It is no surprise that its acclaimed performance at the 2010 Newport Folk Festival was hailed as one of highlights of the entire weekend by NPR. The Museum fuses traditional Mexican folk with American roots and indie rock to create an utterly unique Mexo- Americana aesthetic. Combining Latin rhythms, call-and-response hollering, and donkey jawbone rattling, they have electrified audiences across the country and are kicking up a cloud of excitement with their high-energy border-crossing sensibility (The New Yorker). — www.davidwaxmuseum.com

ABOUT JAKE SHIMABUKURO

Jake Shimabukuro (photo credit: Merri Cyr)

In his young career, ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro has already redefined a heretofore under-the-radar instrument, been declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone, won accolades from the disparate likes of Eddie Vedder, Perez Hilton and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, wowed audiences on TV (Jimmy Kimmel, Conan), earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, and even played in front of the Queen of England.

With his new record Grand Ukulele, Shimabukuro’s star may burn even brighter. An ambitious follow-up to 2011’s Peace, Love, Ukulele (which debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Charts), the Hawaiian musician’s new record finds him collaborating with legendary producer/engineer Alan Parsons, best known for his work on Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, The Beatles’ Abbey Road and his own highly successful solo project.  Parsons ended up helping Shimabukuro expand his sound, bringing in a 29-piece orchestra and a big-name rhythm section, including drummer Simon Phillips (The Who, Toto), session superstar bassist Randy Tico and Kip Winger (Winger, Alice Cooper), who helped with the orchestration.

ABOUT TOM PAXTON

Tom Paxton will appear in a solo acoustic concert at the Colonial on Saturday, May 21 at 8pm. This legend of the folk music scene will take the stage for a one-night only event.

Tom Paxton has become a voice of his generation, addressing issues of injustice and inhumanity, laying bare the absurdities of modern culture, and celebrating the tenderest bonds of family, friends, and community. In describing Tom Paxton’s influence on his fellow musicians, Pete Seeger has said: “Tom’s songs have a way of sneaking up on you. You find yourself humming them, whistling them, and singing a verse to a friend. Like the songs of Woody Guthrie, they’re becoming part of America.” Paxton has been an integral part of the songwriting and folk music community since the early 1960s, and continues to be a primary influence on today’s “New Folk” performers.

Paxton’s song books, critically acclaimed children’s books, award-winning children’s recordings, and a catalog of hundreds of songs, all serve to document Tom Paxton’s 45-year career. An internationally recognized and loved cultural figure, he has always chosen goodwill over commercial success. … This is the man who wrote and lives the words, “Peace will come, and let it begin with me.” He is one of the great songwriters of the last century and will be reckoned as one of the greats in this century, as well. – www.tompaxton.com

ABOUT NICOLE ATKINS

Three years after her debut album, Neptune City, Nicole Atkins returns with gripping ferocity on Mondo Amore. From the first track, “Vultures”, Atkins’ toe-tapping, foot-stomping, hip-swaying music moves through your bones. With years to perfect it, every note and beat seems crafted with intention and care, accentuating her equally deliberate words. The songs play like anthems, commanding you to sing along as her lyrics tell a long-awaited story.

Through the process of making the album, she broke up with her boyfriend, her band and Columbia Records, choosing to produce it on her own and eventually releasing it on Razor & Tie. “It was like the ending of life as you know it. It’s funny because most of the songs are about those three things at the same time, so in a lot of breakup records you want to point fingers, but I don’t think that this record is like that at all.”

Effortlessly blending rock, blues, country and soul, Atkins has delivered on Mondo Amore with a collection of songs that invites you into her world. Even the more somber songs are sung with a gritty earnestness that carries the energy of her more vibrant songs throughout the entire project.

If your idea of a folk singer/songwriter concert is a bunch of people clapping politely after songs, and then sitting quietly while the performer says things like “This next song is about …”, well, you’ve never seen a Cheryl Wheeler concert before. Cheryl’s concerts are more like what you would find at a comedy club than a folk concert. She will tell a story that has you rolling in the aisles, and then sing a song that leaves you wiping tears from your eyes. Continuing our Parents’ Night Out promotions, Hilltown Families and Signature Sounds Concerts have partnered up to offer a pair of tickets for one lucky couple to a special New Year’s Day Concert with Redbird in concert at Memorial Hall in Shelburne Falls on Saturday, January 1st at 7:30pm with opening act, The David Wax Museum.

This is a very rare area performance by Redbird (Jeffrey Foucault, Kris Delmhorst, Peter Mulvey) will celebrate the release of their new CD, Redbird Live at The Cafe Carpe.

Win a pair of tickets and take your spouse, partner or good friend for a night out. Deadline to enter to win: Tuesday, December 28th, 2010 at 7pm (EST). More details below.

ABOUT REDBIRD

Redbird is both the name of the album and the loose affiliation of three acclaimed American songwriters that began to take shape during a common tour experience. In January of 2003, Kris Delmhorst, Jeffrey Foucault and Peter Mulvey did a run of shows together in England. Most afternoons they found themselves with a few free hours at a hotel, and without fail they engaged in an off-the-cuff song circle. Across the tour, they discovered musical affinity and a shared love of a fairly diverse spectrum of Americana.

It was a natural idea to do a record, but in keeping with the spontaneous nature of their original sessions, they did it in a living room, around one microphone, in three days in the hot August of 2003. The members enlisted multi-instrumentalist David “Goody” Goodrich as a fourth member, and tackled a mixed bag of traditional tunes, old jazz standards, rock & roll and country songs, as well as a number of songs by cohorts and contemporaries (Jabe Beyer, Mark Sandman, Ry Cavanaugh, Paul Cebar). Kris and Peter also swapped covers, backed Jeffrey on one of his originals, and they all lent their instrumental skills to a Goodrich composition. What emerged was a real-time, un-staged love letter to the body of American song. Their live show echoed the trio’s stripped down and spontaneous beginning and was hailed by critics: “At the end Redbird took flight, leaving the stage to applause that was as thunderous as the performance was low-key… If the rest of the performances are as well-received as this one was by the standing-room audience, the artists might as well consider making the arrangement permanent” (The Washington Post).

ABOUT THE DAVID WAX MUSEUM

The David Wax Museum, “one of Boston’s hottest new bands” (The Boston Globe), fuses exuberant Mexican roots music with homegrown country folk, creating a unique Mexo-Americana sound. With Latin rhythms, call-and-response hollering, accordion pumping and donkey jawbone rattling, they have won over audiences across the country. Having toured with The Avett Brothers and shared the stage with Carolina Chocolate Drops, Ben Kweller, The Low Anthem and Nathaniel Rateliff, they were fresh off a national tour with the Old 97′s when they arrived at the Newport Folk Festival on August 1, 2010, and made a big splash: NPR’s All Songs Consideredfeatured them as one of the highlights of Newport. In addition to selling out historic venues such as Boston’s Club Passim and touring with national acts, The David Wax Museum has been causing a ruckus in living rooms and backyards throughout the country. In these unique settings, the band’s fiery and heart-wrenching shows have created an undeniable buzz and a devoted following.

Big Name in a Small Room Concert Series Continues in the Hilltowns

Strange Coincidences

I have a friend named Dave Taylor who I worked with in New Orleans. Dave now lives in New York.  His best friend is named Seth Bernard. Seth lives in Michigan and his girlfriend is named May Erlewine. Dave Taylor’s mom was in the hospital having surgery in Florida. While she was recovering from surgery, a young woman came in to sing to her as part of the hospital’s new recovery through music program.  The young woman sang a gorgeous and uplifting song that she said was written by a friend of hers named May.  Dave’s grandmother, who was there visiting her daughter said, “I know a May.  She lives in Michigan. Her name is May Erlewine.”  The young woman said, “That’s the same May who wrote the song!”  And the young singing woman?  That was Rani Arbo of Ashfield!

The only part of the story I don’t know is why Rani was singing in a hospital in Florida.  But I don’t really care—I love the story!

Not this last summer, but the previous August we had a concert by May and Seth across the street in the backyard of the inn and it was beautiful!  May wrote the Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem favorites, “Shine On” and “Rise up Singing.” (Remember that concert?  It rained all the way through it, but it was such beautiful music that no one left!)

This Saturday Elmer’s in Ashfield, MA is going to bring them back and inside as part of our Big Name in a Small Room Concert Series continues with May Erlewine and Seth Bernard! This Saturday, November 20th. Dinner will begin at 5pm and the concert begins at 7pm. Tickets for this are required so that we don’t go over room capacity. Git ‘em now! (413) 628-4003

ABOUT RICHARD SHINDELL

An expatriate New Yorker now living in Argentina, Richard Shindell is a meticulous craftsman of song whose four studio albums and recent live recording have been revered by critics and fans alike. Innovative, original and occasionally spiritual, Shindell’s songs weave tales that interchangeably champion the downtrodden, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to those lost to society’s fringes. As The Boston Globe raved: “Shindell is a master builder of songs, yet always leading listeners toward the emotional essence of the moment or character he is evoking. As with all master craftsmen, knowing what to leave out is as important to him as what he puts in. Shindell has uncanny sense of the theater of a song, building his ballads sparely and subtly, set to sweeping graceful melodies.”

Win a pair of tickets and take your spouse, partner or good friend for a night out. Deadline to enter to win: Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 at 7pm (EST). More details below.

ABOUT SONYA KITCHELL

After her 2008 album, This Storm, suggested that Pioneer Valley native Sonya Kitchell was forsaking jazz for a more pop-rock approach (and a fine one at that), the singer does a 180-degree turn with her latest recording, Convict of Conviction, a six-song EP of gorgeously rendered chamber pop. Piano has replaced guitar as Kitchell’s own instrument, and a string quartet has replaced a rock band as her backup, forefronting Kitchell’s ever-evolving, insinuating vocals, which now sound incredibly dusky, mature, and confident for someone who still is only twenty-one-years-old. After a year on the road with Herbie Hancock (as part of his Joni Mitchell tribute project) and touring with jam-band trio the Slip, Kitchell returned to Shelburne Falls, MA to write these quiet ballads and torch songs, which connect her jazz origins to progressive classical song. Credit Kitchell with following the lead of her restless muse and capturing her own moment in time.

ABOUT RUSTY BELLE

Rusty Belle is a group of self described “weird” kids from Amherst, MA. taking a new approach on old styles. You’ll hear Americana, rock & roll, blues and folk in their sets, but you’ll never exactly pinpoint it. They provide something different,
yet beautiful as they swagger between raw blues, tiny tangos, country waltzes and backyard symphonies

Princess Katie & Racer Steve have recently released a new album titled Tiny Cool, which has been described as “a book you cannot put down – in music form!” They create high energy, positive and upbeat music that both kids and parents alike can enjoy.

Spontaneity and surprise are key to PK&RS shows. You never know what they’ll dream up. Princess Katie (aka Katie O’Sullivan) says, “I just can’t seem to do a show unless it’s spectacular for the kids!”

“Alternative rock-loving parents will dig how much Katie sounds like Natalie Merchant (only much more chipper), and the high-spirited high jinks of Racer Steve will keep their tots in stitches.” (FamilyFun magazine)

ABOUT MOUNTAIN PARK

Following its opening in 1894 as a picturesque retreat on the side of Mount Tom, Mountain Park expanded and evolved into one of the most beloved amusement parks in New England. At the beginning of the 20th century, Holyoke was the most prosperous community in the state and the first planned industrial city in the United States. The city’s progress drew crowds of visitors to Mountain Park, and the park gradually developed into a bustling destination. Although the park closed its gates in 1987, the echoes of laughter from generations of visitors still reverberate throughout the Pioneer Valley. Today, Mountain Park evolves into the next millennium as a new host for music, entertainment and outdoor family fun.

ABOUT WILLIE NELSON

Willie Nelson played a vital role in post-rock & roll country music. Although he didn’t become a star until the mid-’70s, Nelson spent the ’60s writing songs that became hits for stars like Ray Price (“Night Life”), Patsy Cline (“Crazy”), Faron Young (“Hello Walls”), and Billy Walker (“Funny How Time Slips Away”) as well as releasing a series of records that earned him a small, but devoted, cult following. During the early ’70s, Willie aligned himself with Waylon Jennings and the burgeoning outlaw country movement that made him into a star in 1975, as recognizable in pop circles as he was to the country audience. In addition to recording, he also launched an acting career in the early ’80s. Willie has never played it safe musically. Instead, he borrowed from a wide variety of styles, including traditional pop, Western swing, jazz, traditional country, cowboy songs, honky tonk, rock & roll, folk, and the blues, creating a distinctive, elastic hybrid. Nelson has gone back to his roots for his new album Country Music, produced by T-Bone Burnett and featuring a collection of vintage country standards played by Nashville’s top flight bluegrass musicians.

Primate Fiasco with Hilltown Students at GatorRoo Music Festival

GatorRoo Music Festival in Huntington
Tuesday, June 22nd at 6pm

The Primate Fiasco is normally found in front of a mob of screaming college students and jazz enthusiasts. However, children have become more and more of a constant at Primate Fiasco shows due to the high energy, whimsical, short attention span of the music. The Primate Fiasco will be performing with all Gateway elementary students (K- 4), Paul Sawyer and the Harmonic Evolution at the GatorRoo Music Festival on Tuesday, June 22nd.

The evening will conclude with a grant finale of all elementary students performing “All You Need Is Love” with over 40 wind and string players accompanying from Gateway bands, the community and Primate Fiasco.

“It will be a night to remember when we come together as a community to celebrate our children and music,” said Paul Sawyer, elementary music director.

ABOUT BETH NIELSEN CHAPMAN

Longtime fans of Beth Nielsen Chapman will notice that the black & white portrait on the cover of her new CD, Back To Love, bears a striking resemblance to the artwork on her self-titled 1990 album. Happily, the similarity doesn’t end there. Over the course of 11 stunning new compositions, Back To Love brings the acclaimed, Nashville-based singer/songwriter full circle, back to the soul-deep songwriting style that made her famous and provided big hits for herself and covers by an impressive and eclectic group of artists including Elton John, Faith Hill, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Trisha Yearwood, Neil Diamond, Patty Griffin and Emmylou Harris, to name but a few. And while the soaring melodies, bell-clear vocals and heart-penetrating lyrics are reassuringly in place, there’s a new depth to the singer and to the songs, reflecting every turn in the tragic (Beth lost her husband to cancer and is a survivor of both breast cancer and a brain tumor) and-triumphant road Nielsen Chapman has traveled.

For newcomers to the magic and the music of Beth Nielsen Chapman, Back To Love is a bright new chapter in her songbook of life’s revelations. Her musical journey has taken her in a number of directions during the past thirty years, but perhaps none so enjoyable as the contentment on Back To Love.
