Girls Summer Science Camp in Western Mass

Biotechnology Summer Camp for girls

Girls who want to explore the field of science will have a special opportunity to do just that this summer. Girls who are currently in 7th or 8th grade are eligible to attend a free Biotechnology Summer Camp (2007) , thanks to a Pioneer Valley Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network (PV STEMNET) grant.

High School Biotechnology Teacher Cyndi Jensen applied for the funding, and the award was announced two weeks ago. “This program is just for girls, taught by young women who have a passion for biotechnology,” explained Jensen.

Biotechnology students and alumni from Gateway Regional High School will serve as mentors and instructors, under the direction of Jensen. Participants will learn to use biotechnology equipment and techniques such as pipetting and loading gels. Campers will explore DNA fingerprinting, medical and eco-biotechnology.

Two sessions will be offered this summer. The first will be held from July 23rd through August 3rd at Gateway Regional High School, and is open to 7th and 8th grade girls who attend Gateway Regional Middle School. The second session will be held from August 13th through August 24th at Holyoke Community College, and will be open to 7th and 8th grade girls from Western Massachusetts.

The Biotech Summer Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily and snacks will be provided. Students are advised to bring a lunch. There is no charge for attending this camp.

Camp will culminate with a project that will be presented to parents and community members.

Registration forms can be downloaded, printed and mailed back. Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
