My daughter’s kindergarten class seems to collectively have a great interest in insects, and she’s thrilled! Last week she brought in a few Monarch Butterfly chrysalis and the class got to watch one emerge. Another opportunity to bring a bug to class arose yesterday on her way to the “Carpool Stop” when she found a large dragonfly on the side of the rode. She tucked it into a discarded envelope brought it in to share. Continuing with their bug theme, today her class did an insect study by using clay to sculpt their favorite insects. She’s in bug heaven!
This week’s episode, The King of the Insects, is named after a dream my daughter had recently. She shares this dream with the listening audience, so be sure to “listen now.” Along with her dream story we played songs of spiders, cockroach, butterflies, house flies, ants and ladybugs.
We played Elizabeth Mitchell’s rendition of “Ladybugs Picnic” on this weeks episode, a sweet version that’s a personal favorite of mine. The song first appeared on Sesame Street when I was a kid:
Sing along! Here’s the lyrics:
One two three
Four five six
Seven eight nine
Ten eleven twelve
Ladybugs cameTo the ladybugs’ picnic
One two three
Four five six
Seven eight nine
Ten eleven twelve
And they all played games
At the ladybugs’ picnicThey had twelve sacks so they ran sack races
And they fell on their backs and they fell on their faces
The ladybugs 12
At the ladybugs’ picnicThey played jump rope but the rope it broke
So they just sat around telling knock-knock jokes
The ladybugs 12
At the ladybugs’ picnicOne two three
Four five six
Seven eight nine
Ten eleven twelve
And they chatted away
At the ladybugs’ picnicThey talked about the high price of furniture and rugs
And fire insurance for ladybugs
The ladybugs 12
At the ladybugs’ picnic
12!

I loved the ladybug song as a kid and still sing it with my kids! Thanks for having it on your show. I love the original version. Who sang it?
