ABOUT RODRIGO Y GABRIELA

How did two Mexican-born heavy-metal enthusiasts end up at the top of the Irish charts? The story begins back in their homeland, where Rodrigo Sanchez (lead guitar) and Gabriela Quintero (rhythm and guitar-top hand percussion) met as teenagers. Following years of fruitless struggle, they settled in Dublin, working as street entertainers, eventually wandering as far afield as Denmark and Spain. But over time, their virtuoso duo-guitar instrumentals garnered them a following, which in turn led to indoor engagements where they no longer had to freeze their hands off. And no wonder — their eruptive mixture of Central and South American folkways, with its propulsive rock rhythms, plus grooves reminiscent of The Gipsy Kings‘ crowd-pleasing Catalan rumbas, is incredibly infectious.

11:11, the long awaited follow up to their 2006 self-titled debut, was recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico and produced by Rodrigo y Gabriela, with John Leckie (Radiohead, The Stone Roses, Muse) co-producing one of the tracks. The album was mixed in Wales and London by Colin Richardson, best known for his work with Slipknot and Trivium. Comprising 11 new original compositions, 11:11 is the band s personal Gracias to 11 musicians, both past and present, who have inspired them along the way. Alex Skolnick of metal gods Testament guests on the album, as do widely respected acoustic veterans Strunz & Farah. If their self-titled debut was a successful attempt at capturing the unbridled dynamic energy of their incendiary gigs (mostly recorded live in the studio, with very few overdubs); then the new album sees them developing their core sound into something more sophisticated, intricate and varied. At the heart of the sound is still the stunning interplay between Rodrigo s dazzling lead work and Gabriela s unique rhythm play; but the base soundscape is now subtly supplemented by percussion, occasional piano and a fresh arsenal of stringed instruments from around the world, including oud and sitar. And – whisper it quietly the introduction here and there of electric guitar.

I have a young friend who would die to be in the same room with them. It would be a fantastic boon to be able to take him to their concert at the Calvin and just wonderful to watch him jump up and down after I told him I had tickets.

I was a former Spanish language instructor and now I teach a course in world geography and culture. The story of this duo is fascinating for me (and potentially) my students) on many levels. Thanks for the possibility.
