JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Outreach Coordinator for the Old Creamery Co-op in Cummington, MA. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Lezlie Densmore writes: I’m organizing the La Leche League Nursing Mothers’ Booth at the Big E again this year and I’m starting to line up volunteers. La Leche League has been sponsoring the Nursing Mother’s Booth for a few years now and we reach well over 1000 people each year. I need volunteers to sit at the table and keep an eye on the booth. All volunteers that help for 4 hours or more receive a free entrance pass and a free parking pass for the day. The dates this year are Sept 17 – Oct 3. We need at least 3 people per day but can have as many as 6, so invite a friend or spouse to come along! DISCOVERING COLONIAL NEW ENGLAND: Family activities continue at Historic Deerfield with “Colonial Colors: Fun with Paint and Dye,” an exploration of the rich and vibrant colors and hues found in everyday colonial New England life through August 15th. This program will look at how fabric dyes were made from local plants, as well as imported dye stuffs. Learn how people colored their houses with paint ground from natural pigments and mixed it with natural materials such as linseed oil or even milk! Historic houses and the Flynt Center of Early New England Life will be open for visitors to see ways in which people made their interiors stand out with color. Visitors can also create their own colors using natural materials and methods, and make a project to take home.
EDUCATORS WORKSHOP: Project Learning Tree, a prek-8 educator workshop at Mount Tom State Reservation on Friday, Aug. 20th from 9am-3pm. FUNDRAISER: Ride Like an Animal benefit motorcycle ride, Thomas J. O’Conner Center Animal Control & Adoption Center, happens on August 14th in Springfield. Riders will take a scenic route around the Quabbin Reservoir before arriving at the Holyoke Lodge of Elks at for an afternoon of music, fun, and delicious food. Local Indie-Folk Rock band, Infinitie August will be performing at the event, and a variety of contests and raffle prizes will be given away to attendees. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Learn how to be a family farm ambassador. CISA is hosting a training session on Thursday, August 19 at 7 pm for anyone interested in serving as a community outreach volunteer for CISA at local food and farm events this summer and fall. As an outreach volunteer, you’ll help promote small farms and help spread the word about the benefits of buying locally grown food. Plus, you’ll earn free entry into some of the best agricultural events in the area!
