Cynithia Poirier of Plainfield, MA writes: Bill KochYouth Nordic Ski League invites girls and boys ages 5-13 to join. This is a family oriented volunteer program: Parents/Guardians are expected to participate with their children – lots of fun. The league meets Sundays at Notchview in Windsor from 2-4pm for 10 weeks from starting 12/19/10. Learn how to cross-country ski with a peer group from the basics up to racing. League fees apply. Families must also purchase a Trustees of Reservations membership to ski at Notchview. Ski leasing is available. Stacey Mackowiak of Cummington, MA writes: Handmade for Kids Holiday Fair at the Cummington Community House in Cummington, MA on November 13th 10-3pm. The Handmade for Kids Holiday fair features local crafters selling beautiful, handmade goods for kids of all ages; toys, clothing, diapers, art, ceramics, and much more. We will have holiday crafts for kids, a children’s play space, baked goods, and a raffle featuring baskets of handmade goods. Admission is free so bring the whole family! Peter Rayton writes: The Berkshire Trails Nordic Ski Club will hold its annual XC ski and clothing sale at Notchview Reservation, a property of The Trustees of Reservations, on Rt 9 in Windsor on Saturday, November 6 from 10a.m.-12p.m.. Cross Country skis, boots, poles-for adults and kids – from racing to touring, winter sports equipment and clothing for adults and children are featured. Anyone may consign cross country skis and other sports equipment and clothing to the sale. Items may be dropped off at Notchview Reservation on 11/5 from 7-8:30p.m. or 11/6 from 9-10a.m. Commission will be charged to benefit the Berkshire Trails Bill Koch Youth Ski League. FREE AFTERNOON PROGRAM: Every Tuesday in November, Hilltown Families sponsor, Cup and Top Cafe (1 N Main St.) in Florence, will host a free Puppet Show – Sing Along Time with Anna Sobel of Talking Hands Theatre for families with kids up to 5yo! Meet different puppets every week. Learn hand motions to classic kids’ songs and pick up some catchy new tunes. Anna is a former preschool music teacher and led sing-alongs at Brooklyn cafes for five years. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Biocitizen is seeking volunteers to begin a long-term stream monitoring project in collaboration w/MA DEP. We use the rapid biotic assessment technique, which involves collecting and inventorying benthic invertebrates (water bugs); the type of bugs we find give us a gauge of the stream’s health. We’re scheduling 4 assessments for these 4 weekend days from 1-3 pm: Oct. 30 & 31, Nov. 6 & 7. Children and families are invited to be trained for free. It’s great for those interested in biology, ecology, environmental protection. It is possible, since this is a long-term project, for families, and their schools, to adopt a stream and watch over it. NEW BABY SOCIAL: All families living in the hilltowns with babies under 6 months are invited to a “Baby Meet and Greet” Saturday, November 6 from 10 to 11 AM at the Gateway Family Center. The Academy at Charlemont hosts its annual Cornucopia Auction Saturday, Nov. 6, 5-9 pm, at the school, 1359 Route 2, featuring locally produced crafts, fine arts, artisan farm products, gift certificates for area restaurants, theatres, museums and services, and vacation getaways. Admission is $20 and includes locally made cheeses, wines, brews and ciders, sweet and savory hors d’oeuvres, and delectable desserts.
