ABOUT MOUNTAIN PARK

Following its opening in 1894 as a picturesque retreat on the side of Mount Tom, Mountain Park expanded and evolved into one of the most beloved amusement parks in New England. At the beginning of the 20th century, Holyoke was the most prosperous community in the state and the first planned industrial city in the United States. The city’s progress drew crowds of visitors to Mountain Park, and the park gradually developed into a bustling destination. Although the park closed its gates in 1987, the echoes of laughter from generations of visitors still reverberate throughout the Pioneer Valley. Today, Mountain Park evolves into the next millennium as a new host for music, entertainment and outdoor family fun.

Thank you to everyone who participated and this great bucket list of things to do in Western MA in the spring time!

  2. A day in Turners’ Falls can be rocking. Check out the Fish Ladder – cool underwater views of fish swimming their way through – then Great Falls Discovery Center, a cup of coffee and yummy treat at 2nd st Bakery (on 4th st) or is it 4th st Bakery (on 2nd st), followed by a wander through the fabulous aesthetically wacky store, LOOT, where old factory finds have been repurposed and funny bits of nostalgia mingle with local artists’ works. Hit the Rendezvous for a quick bite and a beer before heading back to wherever you started.

  3. My town is South Hadley, MA.

  4. A hike to the Summit House on a beautiful spring day is always a great way to get some exercise and fresh air with the family.

  5. The Turners Falls Family Fish Day was great this year! It is usually held the first weekend in June and they have all sorts of things to see and do. My oldest daughter learned how to tie a fly lure. I was impressed with the amount of one on one attention the children got. There was also equipment for fishing, crafts, and a raffle for the kiddos. We had a fantastic time!

  6. Lupa zoo! So nice to have a zoo so close to home. The kids can feed the animals and we can get some good exercise walking around the grounds. The giraffe was the biggest attraction even I though the peacocks were beautiful. We all stop at Randell’s farm for some delicious ice cream and then head home tired but happy with all the wonderful memories we created that day.

  7. Visited the Bridge of Flowers in Shelbourne Falls with the grandkids….beautiful!

  8. Our family always looks forward to the North Hadley Sugar Shack in Hadley as well as the River Meltdown in Florence. But the one event that helps us welcome spring is the Spring Bulb Show at Smith Botanical Gardens in Northampton.

  11. In Easthampton at the Acadia Wildlife Sanctuary there was a wonderful evening activity. There was a ranger led hike. On this hike there were many stops where volunteers acted out skits about animals that live in Vernal Pools. There is a presentation and snacks. This annual activity is so popular there is a need to pre-register.

March to May has a lot to offer in Western Mass from Easter Egg Hunts in Turners Falls to South Deerfield. We attended the Spring Parade in Turners Falls where kids and adults alike marveled at the beautiful floats and the kids enjoyed the candy thrown to them. We also enjoyed Old Deerfield’s Walking Tour browsing through all the old houses and hearing stories about the people who lived there and the Indians whom also were well known in the area. Last weekend we enjoyed the Family Fishing Festival where the kids learned to cast and actually fish for the first time in Turners Falls. They also enjoyed seeing the stergeon which are an endangered species, making fish art projects, and watching fish swim by behind the glass of the dam. What else? Again, in Turners Falls, there is the Fish Ladder enjoy. In Northampton, Look Park. In Deerfield, the Dino Shop on Rt 5 & 10 followed by a picnic at Mt Sugarloaf. Yankee Candle is always a good time as well as the kids cooking classes at Chandler’s Tavern. So much to do in Western Mass I could go on and on…

  18. We went to A Farm Tale at the N. Hadley Sugar Shack when they opened for the season a few weeks ago, and it was so fun! I wondered why there weren’t more people there! So many fun things for kids to do. Goats, turkeys, rabbits, llamas, chickens, ducks, miniature donkeys, and peacocks! Swings, play houses, tricycles, playground. A fishing pond that my 4yo just loves. Miniature golf, and a climbing structure for goats! This place is a true gem.
