Juniper Institute for Young Writers

Amherst, MA ♦ A kind of magic happens when you bring together a group of young people who love to write: Over the course of eight days at the Juniper Institute for Young Writers, high school students find access to the writer’s life. Through a curriculum that facilitates wild invention, participants generate new writing, experiment with style and form, access tools for finding inspiration in their day-to-day lives, and learn how to connect with an audience. Learning together in close-knit “pods,” young writers participate in workshops, studio sessions, readings, and field trips. Many also earn academic credit while they enjoy a pre-college residential experience on the UMass Amherst campus in Amherst, Massachusetts, an area rich with literary history.

Drawing from many traditions, they nurture the creative, intellectual and emotional growth of the children in their care. Pioneer Valley Ballet Summer Program

Artplay at Hawley

Our Place Summer School

Valley Performance Playground

Summer Art in Marion’s Barn

North Hatfield, MA ♦ Summer Art in Marion’s Barn is now in its 30th year. They offer a full day of art activities. A large barn and outbuildings house studios for painting, drawing, pottery, sculpture, and crafts and there is lots of green outdoor space for games at recess time. Kids Golf Clinics

Worthington, MA ♦ The Links at Worthington will be hosting a free series of Junior Golf Clinics at their course in Worthington from Jun 18-Aug 13. Francis Kringle, their PGA Professional, will instruct classes in the basics of golf, progressing through the program to more advanced techniques and the rules of the game. Participants explore the gardens, fields, woods, and stream of an organic farm while learning to experience the world as an artist, a farmer, and a naturalist. The Experimentory at Deerfield Academy

Vävstuga Weaving School

Shelburne Falls, MA ♦ Fiber Frolic: Weaving, Spinning, & Dyeing. Spend a week with weavers of all ages in a beautiful natural setting. Bring your child or teen for an unplugged week sharing picnics, playing old-fashioned games, and exploring a variety of fiber arts, in addition to weaving on hand looms both big and small in a barn studio. Participants will learn to weave on floor looms and take home their very own rag rug and woven towel or napkin. Time will also be spent weaving on a band loom, a drawloom, and an old Viking-style loom, as well as spinning, natural dying, and sewing your handwoven fabric into a bag or pillow.
