ABOUT MARCO BENEVENTO

For more than a decade pianist Marco Benevento has been amassing an extensive resume of composition and collaboration. His albums set forth a vision that connects the dots between MGMT and Tortoise on one side, Brian Eno and Brad Mehldau on the other. In the live setting, his performances reverberate with pulsating dance rock energy, which has led to numerous high profile appearances, ranging from Carnegie Hall to Celebrate Brooklyn, Newport Jazz to Bonnaroo. Benevento has been invited to open for The Books, Ben Folds and Rubblebucket, while headlining shows from coast to coast.

The 36-year old artist took a major step forward with the release of his 2012 album, TigerFace. The ten-track collection is painted in a myriad of sonic colors, shimmering with acoustic piano, synths and analog keyboards, while the songs are seemingly conceptualized from every wisp of melody that’s ever tickled his ear.

In 2014, Benevento returned to the studio to record his latest work with producer Richard Swift whose resume includes The Shins, Foxygen and Tennis. Together, they focused their attention on a collection of news songs Benevento had written that expand upon his lush instrumental piano rock to include vocals. The album, entitled Swift, will be released September 16 on Royal Potato Family.

As anybody who’s seen Marco Benevento perform can attest, with eyes closed, smile wide across his face and fingers free-flowing across the keys, the pianist is a satellite to the muse. With a devout and growing fan-base, Benevento is an artist whose story is only beginning to unfold. — marcobenevento.com

ABOUT JONNY LANG

Almost two decades ago, an unknown teenage blues guitarist named Jonny Lang was thrust into the mainstream spotlight. Lang, who grew up in North Dakota and began playing the guitar at age 12, found himself on MTV at 16, promoting his 1997 major-label debut album Lie to Me and opening shows for Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones and then, a legendary mentor stepped forward: B.B. King. The elder statesman took Lang on tour and took the kid under his wing. Lang, now 34, played many gigs through the years with King until the performers death in May. The musical part of it was there, of course, but the biggest thing I took away was how he treated me. Respective differences in race, geography and upbringing didn’t diminish in their sharing of blues music. Lang has a keen sense of what he aims to achieve creatively, what music means to him, and is focused on the impact that his songs bring to the lives of those that encounter his repertoire. With his latest album, Fight For My Soul, the maturing songwriter has found his true voice. – www.jonnylang.com

ABOUT VIEUX FARKA TOURE & JULIA EASTERLIN

When Vieux Farka Toure (Niafunke, Mali) and Julia Easterlin (Brooklyn, USA) met for the first time for an impromptu studio session as Vieux passed through New York in the summer of 2014, something divine happened, transcending what each was capable of on their own. Thus their collaboration was born and an entire album project entitled TOURISTES conceived; to examine their respective musical roots and passions together and transform what they find into something entirely new and unique.  The album, due September 18, 2015, on Six Degrees Records., features eight original tunes, along with covers of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War” and Fever Ray’s “I’m Not Done.” Both inspired performers on their own, together Vieux and Julia prove themselves kindred spirits in moments of pure beauty, joy, melancholy and magic.  They create music equal parts modern and ancient, haunting and playful, subtle and visceral. They will be backed by Vieux’s road test banded that has steadily built an energetic and loyal fan base throughout North America and the world.

The Aliya Cycon Project Trio opens the show

Inspired by Arabic instruments, melodies, rhythms and people, ACP was formed by Aliya Cycon at Berklee College of Music with fellow Berklee students and denizens of Arabic culture. Cycon uses her highest reverence for the Arabic tradition to expose her own unique voice in her compositions and performance. Her compositions salute the Arabic tradition, as well as to step just outside of its mellifluous frontiers.

ABOUT ANI DIFRANCO

As a singer, songwriter, activist and independent entrepreneur, Ani DiFranco has been setting her own pace—and encouraging countless admirers to do the same—for more than 20 years. But while she has been known as the “Little Folksinger,” her music has grown far beyond her acoustic solo roots in cozy venues to embrace jazz, soul, electronica and even more distant sounds. All of which are featured in DiFranco’s new Righteous Babe release, Allergic To Water, where she also blends abstract imagery and deceptively understated melodies with personal reflections on her life in New Orleans where she is now raising her two children with her partner, producer Mike Napolitano. — www.anidifranco.com

DAR WILLIAMS WRITES:

In today’s music landscape, the impact of introspective and honest lyrics across a full album is often lost at the expense of the single or a viral video. But in the early nineties, Dar Williams’ The Honesty Room struck a chord and captured a moment in time: A rare time in music when the listener was as likely to hear Tori Amos on the radio as Nine Inch Nails and honesty/raw emotion was paramount. Lilith Fair sold as well as Ozzfest and strong songs were more important than image or anything else. Lyrics still came with an album and people connected on a very personal level with a variety of themes and experiences detailed painstakingly on albums like The Honesty Room and more.  Twenty years later, The Honesty Room endures, carrying with it an unparalleled legacy and an enduring sense of optimism. Dar Williams performs The Honesty Room in full at 8PM on Saturday December 13th at the Calvin Theatre. Jill Sobule opens. Special guests are anticipated. — www.darwilliams.com

ABOUT LYLE LOVETT

A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Lovett has appeared in 13 feature films, and on stage and television. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was recently named the Texas State Musician.

Lovett has been touring in support of Release Me since its release in February 2012. The album was #1 for several weeks on the Americana charts. Produced by Nathaniel Kunkel and Lovett, Release Me represents the end of an era as it was his last record for Curb/Universal Music Group after being on the label for his entire career. Release Me is quintessential Lyle, mixing a smart collection of originals and songs written by some of his favorite songwriters that show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most infectious and fascinating musicians in popular music.

Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. His oeuvre, rich and eclectic, is one of the most beloved of any living artist working today — www.lylelovett.com

The guitar is their weapon. Simplicity is Freedom. Tinariwen are often associated with just one image: that of Touareg rebels leading the charge, machine gun in hand and electric guitar slung over the shoulder but the founding members abandoned their weapons long ago and have since engineered a minor aesthetic revolution by setting the electric guitar  the instrument which became their mascot and made them famous  to one side and giving pride of place to acoustic sounds. The desert is the landscape of their existence, the cradle of their culture and the source of their inspiration. They’ve recently collaborated with members of TV On The Radio, Nels Cline (Wilcos guitarist) and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.- tinariwen.com
