Michelle Megna of Cummington, MA writes:

Spring is here and that means it’s time for the annual Cummington Family Center Silent Auction. The CFC is a grassroots, parent-run organization that provides a community-based support network for families in the hilltown area. Through weekly drop-in playgroups, field trips, workshops and social potlucks and celebrations, the CFC helps build a vital link among families in 10 hilltowns, serving Cummington, Dalton, Goshen, Worthington, Ashfield, Plainfield and more.

Each year we host a silent auction, which is our annual fundraising event – we rely on this affair to make money needed to support our initiatives. This year, it’s even more critical to our bottom line, as you can imagine, with the current economy and cuts in our meager county grant assistance.

The auction takes place Saturday, April 10th, 2010 at the Community House on Main Street in Cummington, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and include delicious appetizers, wine and beer, baked goods, music and childcare. On the auction block is a diverse mix of local goods and services. It’s a super fun event — a chance to party and catch up with neighbors and friends — while meeting new ones — and supporting our local communities.

If you’d like to contribute to our auction (gift certificate, admission tickets, product or service) please contact CFC director Amy Grallert at 413-634-5362 or at

If you’d like to simply support us, show up and participate!

Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to call either myself, Michelle Megna at 413-634-5325, or our director, Amy Grallert, at 413-634-5362.

Family Centers Offer More Than Drop-In Playgroups

Area Family Centers Offer Refuge for Parents with Babies & Toddlers

CCL (c)When my daughter was a baby I found sanctuary in our area family center. I was able to meet other sleep deprived mothers in a safe environment where we could breastfeed freely and compare notes while our children took their first steps. I formed everlasting bonds with these mothers as we discussed teething and potty training, while reassuring one another that we weren’t alone in our sleepless world of spit-up and dirty diapers.

According to Hampshire County Family Network, “Family Centers are places where parents meet other parents, children socialize, and parents and children play together. A family center is a drop-in place for parents to spend time with their young children. Children can play, learn, explore, and make new friends. Parents can meet local families and talk about their children. Family centers have toys, books, and activities that young children enjoy.”

To follow is a list of Family Centers in Hampshire County. All centers receive funding from the Hampshire Educational Collaborative and support families with children up through the age of four:
