Harmony Episode with Guest DJ, Renee Stahl of Renee & Friends

The theme of HFVS this week is harmony. Our guest DJ, Renee Stahl of Renee & Friends, has been singing harmony as long as she can remember. It’s something that comes naturally to her. However, this has been a blessing and a curse, as she hears harmony in everything, from the starting of her computer to the telephone ringing. The basic definition is “ when two things come together and create a pleasant effect,” Harmony is something you need more than one person to do (unless you’re recording). She loves collaborating and singing with others and hopes listeners enjoy this episode and find someone in which to harmonize.

Hit a Home Run with Community-Based Learning this Summer through Local Baseball!

Art, History, and Baseball: Learning from a Great American Pastime

Be a part of a great American pastime this summer and head to the ballfield! Families can explore everything from art and design to American history by using baseball as a lens through which to explore local museums, online resources, and fantastic children’s literature.

A springtime standard for many western Massachusetts families, the sport of baseball is certainly one of our country’s favorite pastimes. Certainly the sport has much to offer families in terms of entertainment, but baseball as a topic of study can serve as an entry point into learning about much more than team dynamics and the specifics of the game. Baseball-inspired studies can spark explorations of civil rights, immigration, local and national history, art, design, and more.

While most youth baseball and softball teams play their seasons during the late spring and early summer, baseball as a spectator sport carries on throughout the summer and early fall. Locally, three collegiate summer teams make a summer outing to a baseball game quite accessible for families. The Pittsfield Suns play at Wahconah Park, Holyoke’s Valley Blue Sox‘s home games are at Mackenzie Stadium, and the North Adams SteepleCats play at Joe Wolfe Field.

Off the Mat: Spring Fever

Spring Fever

“Earth laughs in flowers, to see her boastful boys/Earth-proud, proud of the earth which is not theirs.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The previous owner of our house loved lawn. Over the years, we’ve added trees, flower beds, berry bushes, a modest veggie patch which fed a woodchuck family quite well for a season.  An even more modest kitchen garden followed, gifting us a few fresh tomatoes, herbs and greens. Each landscaping mission involved a vigorous effort to remove grass.

Lawn grass is dense. Difficult to penetrate. It’s necessary to disentangle a tough, tight knit system of roots and stems. But once you succeed in making a literal break through, it’s almost like peeling a banana. Large sections of inches thick turf lift away, revealing rich topsoil below, damp and wormy and ready to welcome new roots. New seeds. Spring provides wonderful metaphors. Financial Literacy for All Ages at the Library

Libraries have long been advocates for reading and literacy for the people in their communities. Another community need now being addressed by libraries in an annual campaign is financial literacy and money management. Money Smart Week, a public awareness campaign which seeks to educate people of all ages on the topic of financial literacy, will be observed with free public programs at the Jones Library in Amherst, MA during the week of March 30 – April 6, 2019.

Even very young children can learn these concepts through games, activities, stories, and crafts. These skills benefit young children just as they benefit adults. Talking to your children about saving up for college, for example, can get them thinking about their long term goals and future in a realistic way. Organizers of this campaign have Teacher Resources available online.

Here are a few programs coming up for 2019 Money Smart Week: Read the rest of this entry »

International Day of Forests

March 21 is International Day of Forests! Celebrated worldwide this international observation day works to increase public awareness about the values, significance, and contributions of the forests to balance the life cycle on the Earth, with issues of conservation and deforestation addressed. Various local and global level activities for the International Day of Forests are celebrated or promoted by the UN with governments, community organizations, and the general public.

“Learning to understand our forests and providing children with a foundation to better understand their importance is a critical step to safeguarding natural resources for future generations. Forests help keep air, soil, water and people healthy and play a vital role in addressing some of the biggest challenges we face today, such as climate change, eliminating hunger and keeping urban and rural communities sustainable. With more than half the world’s population living in urban areas, a number expected to rise to 70 percent by 2050, people are increasingly disconnected from nature and lack the awareness and understanding of forests and their benefits and the need to manage them sustainably, making it essential to bring forests into their lives at an early age.”  Read the rest of this entry »
