Hoosac Valley Train rides are for families, groups, and couples. Travel 10 miles on a one-hour scenic train trip through history. Staff are excited to share this rail experience with you. Their authentic Budd railcar is from 1955. Gift shop has memorabilia and rail-related products for adults and children. Group size 20+ are asked to make reservations one week in advance. Summer train rides are every Sat and Sun thru Labor Day at 11am, 1:30pm, and 3pm. Cost $8/10/12. Cabaret Trains are Saturday Aug 26, Sept 9 & 23. Cost $20. The Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a day-long festival featuring students, alumnae, and faculty including: And the Kids, Christine Ohlman, Felixis Jinx, June Millington, Kalliope Jones, Kristen Ford, Leah Kunkel, Lioness, Mal Devisa, Naia Kete, Parlicium, SpaceKase, Whoda’ Funk It?, and Wishbone Zoe. Takes place on Saturday, August 19th at IMA’s Big Barn lawn at 165 Cape Street (Highway 112) in Goshen, MA. Gates open at 11am. Family friendly. Festival seating. Food & drink vendors on-site. The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts’ annual Will Bike 4 Food charity cycling event is returning for its seventh year on Sun., Sept. 24 in Hatfield. You can pedal towards a hunger free community by forming a team of four or more friends, family or co-workers. Riders can choose from any of the four scenic routes (10, 25, 50 or 100 miles) through the Pioneer Valley. Enjoy a fun and exciting day with your team while raising funds and awareness of hunger in our region. Early bird registration ends Aug. 31. Activities include Trolley Rides, Trolley Experiences, Crafting Station, Dress-up Station, Scavenger Hunt, Guided Tours and visiting the Fire Truck Museum on property. Every Monday throughout the summer join CTM for Storytime Monday’s featuring stories about the adventures of trolleys and trains. The reading will be inside one of our historic trolleys and a trolley ride to follow. Every story is different and all ages are welcome! The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts’ annual Will Bike 4 Food charity cycling event is returning for its seventh year on Sun., Sept. 24 in Hatfield. With 4 routes to choose from (10, 25, 50 or 100 miles), riders of all ages can get involved. There’ll be music, food, beverages, games, and more. Last year’s event raised $114,000 to help feed our neighbors in need. You can make this year’s event even more successful. Early bird registration ends Aug. 31. Online-Live Animation and Drawing classes taught by a former Disney animator (and veteran homeschool Dad) Chad Stewart. Offering a 12 week live-online animation courses for 11-18 year olds. He also teaches online drawing classes for multiple ages as well. Weekly classes are one hour long and include personal video reviews for individual learning! The cost is $300 for the full 12 weeks. The Fall Session meets Sept 18-Dec 11, and classes tend to fill up very quickly, so register soon! Hold a child’s spot with a non-refundable $50 registration fee. Support Science! Participate in the Amherst College Children’s Social and Emotional Experiences Study. Two-hour study, $50 compensation. Children 10-12 years, with parents. Amherst College is reaching out to families with children to participate in research studies on social learning and peer relationships this summer on campus. Children and parents visit the Amherst College campus for one two-hour study visit during the summer. Parents and children complete questionnaires about social relationships and emotions. Children also complete a social interaction task and cognitive measures while their physical response (e.g., heart rate and breathing) is recorded. Call 413-542-5619 or peerstudy@amherst.edu.

Calling all volunteers! You can help make The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts’ annual Will Bike 4 Food charity cycling event another tremendous success. Volunteering is a great way to support Will Bike 4 Food for those who are unable to ride at the event. They have a number of volunteer opportunities available throughout the day including check-in & check-out, route patrol, lawn game facilitators, food service, water stop coordinators, and more. Dr. Doolittle is the tale of a kindly doctor who can speak “animal.” No matter the species, this doctor knows what they’re saying and what they need to get well. Be prepared: you’ll be off on quite an adventure. You’ll travel the high seas, visit Africa, and even face pirates. The audience will play birds, sharks, wild beasts, cats, dogs, and even flying fish. Audience member should arrive early if they want a role. Support Science! Participate in the Amherst College Children’s Social and Emotional Experiences Study. Two-hour study, $50 compensation. Children 10-12 years, with parents. Amherst College is reaching out to families with children to participate in research studies on social learning and peer relationships this summer on campus. Children and parents visit the Amherst College campus for one two-hour study visit during the summer. Parents and children complete questionnaires about social relationships and emotions. The Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a day-long festival featuring students, alumnae, and faculty including: And the Kids, Christine Ohlman, Felixis Jinx, June Millington, Kalliope Jones, Kristen Ford, Leah Kunkel, Lioness, Mal Devisa, Naia Kete, Parlicium, SpaceKase, Whoda’ Funk It?, and Wishbone Zoe. Online-Live Animation and Drawing classes taught by a former Disney animator (and veteran homeschool Dad) Chad Stewart. Offering a 12 week live-online animation courses for 11-18 year olds. He also teaches online drawing classes for multiple ages as well. Weekly classes are one hour long and include personal video reviews for individual learning! The cost is $300 for the full 12 weeks. On Sunday July 23rd at Crosier Field in Holyoke, MA the Pioneer Valley Workers Center and Massachusetts Jobs with Justice are hosting their 3rd annual Justice Cup soccer tournament! Come out for a day of family fun for soccer and justice. They have a family division in the tournament so participants can play in safe and kid-friendly games. Also, families with kids too small to play in a game, there will be a children’s tent with activities designed just for them sponsored by A2Z. The suggested donation for registration is $150/team or $20 individual, but everyone is encouraged to pay what they can at registration. No matter what families can give, they want them there to build community and help them win the fight for immigrant and labor justice.

July 28

Join the Connecticut Trolley Museum in East Windsor, CT for a Lutz Children’s Museum program, “Track that Animal” on July 28th at 11am. If anyone has gone for a walk in the woods, they might have seen a footprint or maybe some fresh scat. Evidence of animal presence teaches people about how animals survive in their habitats. From caves to trees, an animal’s home needs to provide food, water, and shelter for survival. Get two Museums for the price of one! Additional activities include Trolley Rides, Trolley Experiences, Crafting Station, Dress-up Station, Scavenger Hunt, Guided Tours and visiting the Fire Truck Museum on property. The Museum is open from 10am-4:30pm, for more information visit www.ct-trolley.org or call 860-627-6540.

By the time the show is done, everyone in the audience will be pirates too! Callum LaFrance is J.J., the captain is Troy David Mercier, and Kelsey Flynn and Myka Plunkett play the rest of the crew. Performances are Fri. July 21 at 7pm and Sat. & Sun. July 22 & 23 at 10:30am & 1pm at Easthampton’s Williston Theatre and Wed. July 26 & Thurs. July 27, 10:30am at Turners Falls’ Shea Theater. Sat. Soar into Summer Fun at New England Air Museum 6/25-8/20. Daily activities include: Open Cockpit, Climb inside real aircraft cockpits and experience the view from the pilot’s seat! Build & Fly Challenges at 10:30am-2:30pm. From kites to parachutes, straw rockets to gliders, test skills with a new challenge each week. Flight Science Demonstrations at 11:30am & 1:30pm. Discover the principles of flight through interactive demonstrations for aviators of all ages. Soaring Story Time at 10:15am. Visitors ages 6 and under are invited to a story and hands-on activity with a different aerospace theme each week. Flight Simulators, Aircraft Quest Scavenger Hunts, and Kidsport: The Kids Only exhibit, and three exhibit hangars filled with over eighty historic aircraft. Sing Along with The Muppet Movie at the Mahaiwe Performing Art Center’s Free Fun Friday, July 7th at 11am, in Great Barrington, MA. In this Sing Along, IBEX Puppetry leads the audience of cheering, singing fans to renew their Rainbow Connection with our fleecy friends who started it all. It’s full of interactive surprises—and children and adults alike are urged to yell out famous lines, dance in the aisles, and of course, sing along with the movie to forge new or renew connections to a film from another generation. Shabbat Shabloom! Fridays at 10am on Abundance Farm in Northampton. End the week with a joyful morning of music and movement with Felicia Sloin and Amy Meltzer – especially for ages 0-5. Enjoy homemade challah, join a service project on the farm, and take flowers home for Shabbat. Every Friday morning at 10am until the end of August (except Aug 4). Activities include Trolley Rides, Trolley Experiences, Crafting Station, Dress-up Station, Scavenger Hunt, Guided Tours and visiting the Fire Truck Museum on property. Storytime Mondays featuring stories about the adventures of trolleys and trains. The readings will be inside one of the historic trolleys and a trolley ride to follow. All ages are welcome! The 26th Annual Ko Festival of Performance, July 3 – August 8, has 5 weeks of original & compelling theatre for teens – adults curated, at this special moment in our country’s history, on the theme of “Tactics for Trying Times.” Also, the Mettawee River Theater Company “Before the Sun & Moon,” based on a Korean folk tale. Performed for all ages, out under the stars with giant puppets, masks, live music and a spirit of celebration. Plus 3 intensive workshops for adults: “Telling Tales with Crankies” with Ines Zeler Bass of Sandglass Theater, “Compassionate Creativity” and “First Person: Crafting Your Story for Performance.” All on the Amherst College campus. Hilltown Families Event

Hilltown Families and The Trustees at the Bryant Homestead host a community picnic on Friday, June 23 from 5-7pm at the Bryant Homestead in Cummington, MA! Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy a meal with friends and family! We’ll set the table in the farm, barn, or on the front lawn weather permiting! 19th-century lawn games will be available for kids to play.  FREE to Hilltown residents or suggested donation of $5. Come to the Town of Conway’s 250 Anniversary Celebration over 2 weekends 6/9-6/18! Six superb short plays 6/9 @ 7:30pm & 6/10 @ 2 and 7:30pm; call 413-369-4301 to reserve free seats. Starting 6/16: Fireworks; Family 5k run; Live music-national and local acts; children’s activities (magic show, movie night, birds of prey and more); Historic walking tour; Teamster’s Challenge; plus great exhibits and presentations: Lester Stevens paintings; Living History of Conway; Conway School of Landscape Design; Agriculture; Antique cars, tractors and engines; outstanding regional Artists show, and all events/exhibits are free, as is ample parking and shuttle transportation. The New England Air Museum will hold an Open Cockpit Day on Father’s Day, Sunday June 18, from 10am to 4pm. Special activities include climbing aboard in historic aircraft; flight simulators; hands-on Build & Fly Challenges. A variety of aircraft will be open for visitors including the WWII era Republic P-47D “Thunderbolt,” the Vietnam War era Bell UH-1B “Huey” helicopter, as well, as supersonic jet fighters including the North American F-100 “Super Sabre” and the Lockheed F-104C “Starfighter.” Time Machine Hobby of Manchester, CT will be here to demonstrate their R/C helicopters and drones. Food and beverage will be available, and all activities are included with museum admission. Rubber-soled shoes recommended. www.neam.org.

Jun 23 & Jul 20

Come to Downtown Amherst this summer for free music in local beautiful parks. Order a take-out meal from one of the tasty restaurants and cafes, spread a blanket, bring some chairs, and enjoy the performances! June 23 at 6pm in Sweetser Park (across from the Black Sheep Deli) is the first of the three Amherst Community Band concerts. The band features members of all ages who play popular and classical tunes, including marches and famous Broadway scores. Tim gives a wonderful background story to each composer and song, so there is learning and listening. July 20 is the start of the concerts in Kendrick Park with Latin-Grammy-award winning performer Mister G with some special guests. Check amherstdowntown.com for more information.

Summer Archery in Florence. Find your center at Amherst Archery Academy. AAA offers Summer Day Programs that are truly an immersion experience in archery: games, crafts, ARTchery, physics, anatomy, and more. New this year: the Athlete Development Day Program is for archers (new and experienced) who have an inner ignition and are looking for deep practice and athletic challenges. This runs in parallel with our general Archery Day Program. For families who want to play together, AAA is offering both standard and immersion evening archery classes in a multi-level, multi-generational program.
