The Center in Amherst is offering a new class for toddlers! Enroll now for an 8 week spring session, starting Friday, March 20th. In this 45 minute class for kids aged 2-5, students will leap, twirl and spin their way into the world of children’s literature. Using picture books, nursery rhymes and songs as inspiration, children will be introduced to the fundamentals of creative movement in a fun, nurturing environment. Whether they’re soaring like the red bird that brown bear saw, leaping and pouncing at the Wild Rumpus, or dancing the alphabet, kids will love this interactive class that honors the reader, and storyteller, in all of us. Our Place Summercamp gets kids off the screen and into the green. For 5 days campers hike, climb, wade and swim “our place”: the 5 ecoregions of the Nonotuck biome. These activities aren’t just “fun”—they’re designed to increase camper’s perceptual abilities, stimulate their critical thinking skills, inspire their creative imaginations, and counteract “nature deficit disorder.” Campers go from site to site—mountains, forests, brooks, industrial brownfields, you name it—on an adventurous, inquiry-based investigation into our living land. Through active physical and mental engagement with “our place,” they gain a deep and lasting appreciation of it—and themselves. On February 14 (Valentine’s Day), you can join the Hilltown Land Trust and The Trustees of Reservations for Snowshoe Shenanigans from 10am-12pm at Notchview Reservation in Windsor. There will be 1km relay and snowshoe races, as well as a kids obstacle course! Everyone is invited to enjoy hot cocoa and s’mores next to a warm fire. Handmade Valentine Exhibit

For the past seven years, Hilltown Families has organized an intergenerational, community-based, handmade Valentine swap. This year, 1,550 handmade valentines are being prepared for swapping through the mail by families, individuals, and even youth groups, just in time for Valentine’s Day. For the month of February, in the Hawks-Hayden Room Gallery at the Meekins Library in Williamsburg, over 100 handmade Valentines sent to Hilltown Families by swap participants over the years will be on display in an exhibit, Handmade Valentines: Connecting & Expanding a Community Tradition. New handmade Valentines received this year as part of the swap will be added to the display throughout the month. Add your handmade valentine to the exhibit! Mail to Hilltown Families, P.O. German puppeteer, Mattias Kuchta, performs a magical production of the Grimm Brothers’ Snow White on Saturday, January 17 & Sunday, January 18 at 1pm at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (125 West Bay Rd) in Amherst. Kuchta, who is on an international tour, transports his audience to a new world with his Fellini-like textile puppets. Kuchta, doesn’t stand silently in the background while his puppets do all the performing. Instead, he moves and maneuvers his puppets like an onstage choreographer, giving them their unique personalities and voices, and fully involving the audience in the fun! First Day Hikes

New Years Day lends itself to reflection, prompting us to think of all that passed in the previous year and all that’s to come in the new one. Families can bring nature into their reflection by participating in an organized community First Day hike, or by finding their own place to explore on their own. Hiking to a high place and watching life in your community from above can provide some much needed perspective on your family’s place within what you see. In combination with hiking and walking in the Pioneer Valley and beyond, girls who take the course will be asked to keep a journal to guide their creativity; whether the girls’ strengths be art or poetry or observation-based writing, the detailing of the biotic world will fall into their hands because creativity, as we know, comes in all shapes and forms. Creative work will be shared and celebrated to build self-confidence and community. These 8 classes will be held on Sundays, 11am-3pm, Jan. 11-Apr. 24.

Hilltown Families’ Event

Hilltown Families’ Family Community Service Event takes place this Saturday, November 22nd from 10am-1pm in Northampton—a one of a kind FREE event for families to volunteer together while educating children about important social issues and the value of community service. Through service-based learning, together we can generate 600 hours of community service in a single morning that support human services, education and children’s welfare support organizations in our region. With a Community Passport in hand, families can travel to five different stations with hands-on activities for kids of all ages, ranging from creating art for elders to tools that support literacy. The Odyssey Bookshop is proud to be launching local author, Jennifer Rosner’s debut picture book, The Mitten String which is a story of “of kindness, love, and overcoming difficult circumstances, be it a disability or the frequent loss of mittens.” Come for a storytime, read by the author herself, and a finger knitting demonstration with sweet treats! A lonely girl is sent outside to hang up the laundry and keep herself busy. The moment her back is turned, a mischievous squirrel appears, steals her favorite piece of clothing and runs off. The 2014 Ashfield Fall Festival (Ashfield, MA) will take place up and down Ashfield’s Main Street on October 11-12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days – rain or shine. The annual festival offers craft and art exhibits by more than 50 exhibitors, locally-grown and prepared foods, live music and dancing, face-painting and other children’s activities, and book and tag sales. Admission is free. Parking is available in lots east of the town center on Route 116 (attendants collect donations for the Ashfield Citizens’ Scholarship Fund).The Festival also hosts the Ashfield Agriculture Commission’s annual Giant Pumpkin and Tallest Sunflower contest. On Thursday, September 18th, the streets of downtown Amherst are closed to traffic and open to a night of fun from 5-9pm for the Celebrate Amherst Block Party presented by the Amherst Business Improvement District! In its third year, this event brings thousands of people to downtown for a lively street fair environment including food vendors, multiple main stages with music, circus performers, dancing, and vendors from many area organizations. Our Place for HomeSchoolers is designed to “unplug” young learners by bringing them into direct contact with the creatures, geologies, hydrologies and infrastructures of the Nonotuck biome and the Westfield River watershed. During a 6 hour session, they roam the valley and the hilltowns, investigating natural and cultural history with all of their senses. An excellent educational enhancement for home schoolers, Our Place allows them to 1) experience first-hand the subjects they study in books and 2) use their background knowledge and critical thinking skills to comprehend, and share their perceptions of, what they are experiencing. On Thursday, September 18th, the streets of downtown Amherst are closed to traffic and open to a night of fun from 5-9pm for the Celebrate Amherst Block Party presented by the Amherst Business Improvement District! Our Place for HomeSchoolers is designed to “unplug” young learners by bringing them into direct contact with the creatures, geologies, hydrologies and infrastructures of the Nonotuck biome and the Westfield River watershed.
