Must-Hear Music Monday: In the Pursuit of Poetry

Gustafer Yellowgold “Question Marks” Video Premier!

If you’ve been following the preview releases of the videos from Gustafer Yellowgold’s newest adventure, Infinity Sock, then you know today’s installment is Question Marks!

I love that Gustafer came to earth “in pursuit of poetry.” He’s here to learn, to experience, and to meet new people. Gus doesn’t have a goal in mind; He’s not the kind of guy looking to answer one question then move on. He’s here to just soak it all in, and that’s what this song is all about – always questing and questioning, sometimes even if there really isn’t an answer.

The concept is so simple and innocent – and so familiar to anyone with kids. Makes me wonder if this song was written by someone with a toddler in the house? What do you think?

This video will only be available for viewing today – February 7th, 2011 – so be sure to check it out!

Like what you see? You can pre-order Gustafer Yellowgold’s Infinity Sock DVD/CD set from Amazon or at a special early bird price direct from the Gustafer Yellowgold website.

Must-Hear Music Monday: Gustafer Yellowgold

Gustafer Yellowgold’s Infinity Sock

Gustafer Yellowgold's Infinity SockThat yellow freckle-faced kid from the sun is up to new adventures in Morgan Taylor’s latest Gustafer installment, Gustafer Yellowgold’s Infinity Sock.

I feel like I have to assume that you’re fully aware of the Gustafer saga by this point: He’s yellow, he comes from the sun, he lives in a house in the Minnesota woods, he has a pet eel, he eats pinecones… you get the picture.

Like all the Gustafer albums before this one, Infinity Sock comes as a CD/DVD set so you can either listen to the songs alone or watch them with their animated videos. Unlike previous Gustafer albums, this one tells a complete story.

In Infinity Sock Gustafer finds a long, long, long sock and decides to follow it to it’s end. Where will it take him? What will he find? How will he be changed by the journey? Along the way we meet favorite characters and learn more about them. Forest Applecrumbie’s tabby cat, Cheddar, has a song devoted to her, as do the Mint Bee and his band.

GustaferGustafer songs are often silly verging on the absurd, but also posit larger universal themes, which is why they appeal so well to both kids and grownups. One of the themes that you see throughout Gustafer’s repertoire is that everyone has value.

Gustafer has a way of seeing little things, like erring ants, and recognizing their beauty. In the new song, Snake Proms, Gustafer learns that one of his favorite foods, snakes, actually has personality and wit. I think Gustafer may now be a vegetarian.

Gustafer’s also the perpetual student, always seeking, observing, and learning. I love the new song Question Marks about how there is never an end to understanding. There’s always something new to see.

Gustafer Yellowgold’s Infinity Sock will be released on March 1st and it’s a must see/listen. Plus, you have to check out the bonus features for the Gustafer Guitar Lessons where Morgan shows you how to play some of his favorite songs. It’s really very cool.

For more teasers and some clips from the new album, check out www.gustaferyellowgold.com/infinity.html.

ABOUT GUSTAFER YELLOWGOLD

It’s been two years in the making and won’t be released until February, but families in Western Mass will have a sneak preview this month when the multimedia Gustafer Yellowgold’s Show comes to the Eric Carle Museum on Gustafer’s “Top of the Sock Tour.”

Gustafer Yellowgold’s Top of the Sock Tour heralds the release of the fourth in the series of award-winning Gustafer Yellowgold “musical moving storybooks,” Gustafer Yellowgold’s Infinity Sock, in which our hero from the sun journeys in search of the end of the universe’s longest sock. This fall’s shows will preview several story-songs from the new DVD/CD set, and Gustafer’s creator, illustrator/songwriter/musician Morgan Taylor, promises to include plenty of “Gustafer fan favorites” in the shows, too!

Hailed as one of today’s most original artists on the family music scene, Morgan Taylor was named “Best Kids’ Performer” by New York Magazine.  Taylor developed the Gustafer Yellowgold experience as equal parts pop rock concert and minimally animated movie, performing alongside a large screen displaying vividly colored animations with karaoke-style subtitles.  He’s dreamed up a whole world of catchy, original story-songs about Gustafer, a friendly creature who came to Earth from the sun and now lives out an explorer’s life in a slightly psychedelic version of the Minnesota woods.  Gustafer resides in a cottage with his menagerie of friends, including a pet eel, a tuxedo-wearing pterodactyl, and a dragon named Asparagus who inhabits the fireplace and loves corn on the cob. For recreation, Gustafer enjoys jumping on cake and, occasionally, punching cheese.

Big thanks to Morgan Taylor from Gustafer Yellowgold who we had on as our special Guest DJ playing tunes from his childhood. Being the youngest of three, Morgan’s music exposure as a kid was from 45s his older siblings had and the radio, where he remembers listening to songs by the Beatles and Crystal Gayle in the mornings while eating breakfast. Morgan selected a couple of tunes by Harry Nilsson for this weeks show. This led me to discover a video from The Point with one of Harry Nilsson’s songs that Uncle Rock played on his Guest DJ visit, “Think About Your Troubles:”

Gustafer Punches Cheese in Florence

Gustafer Yellowgold at the Florence Civic Center

Gustafer Yellowgold in Florence (c) www.HilltownFamilies.orgLast February, Morgan Taylor and Rachel Loshak from Gustafer Yellowgold came to the Pioneer Valley for a memorable family performance at the Flywheel in Easthampton, MA. Well, lots has happen between then and now (for one thing, Flywheel closed their doors in March, with hopes to open again in the Old Town Hall in downtown Easthampton, a very exciting prospect! Click here to read Valley Advocate’s article). This past weekend they performed at the Florence Civic Center in Florence, MA, presented by Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child.

Christy & Kai at the performance (c) www.HilltownFamilies.orgSince their last gig in our area, Gustafer Yellowgold came out with a new CD/DVD this fall, Have You Never Been Yellow?, a sequel to their first album, Gustafer Yellowgold’s Wide Wild World. This weekend’s performance included several songs off of their new CD, including “Punching Cheese,” “The Mustard Slugs” and “Beard For All Seasons.” Each of their songs is a blend of minimally animated illustrations that are accompanied by Taylor’s catchy and original ballads for a truly different multimedia experience. Here’s their performance of “The Mustard Slugs:”

Another exciting thing that has happen since their last visit is that their newest CD won the number one position on the Fids and Kamily Award, which Hilltown Families was invited to participate in as a judge! Congratulations! In a recent post to Hilltown Familes, Fids & Kamily 2007 Awards … My Vote!, written by HF Contributing Writer, Bill Childs from Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child, Childs writes:

Liam during the performance (c) www.HilltownFamilies.orgHave You Never Been Yellow? – Gustafer Yellowgold (www.gustaferyellowgold.com). Gustafer is a small yellow fellow from the sun, and this, the second CD/DVD set to follow his Earthly exploits, is sweetly hilarious and musically rich. The CD stands on its own, but the DVD “moving story book” is what makes the package very nearly perfect.

And the last bit of exciting news we’ll share, Morgan and Rachel will be expecting their first child in a few months! Kudos you two! Wishing you wellness and joy.

Gustafer Yellowgold in Florence!

GUSTAFER YELLOWGOLD
At the Florence Civic Center
Sunday, Dec. 9th @ 4:30pm

The critically acclaimed multimedia musical moving book, The Gustafer Yellowgold Show, returns to the Pioneer Valley with a performance at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 9 at the Florence Civic Center, off Route 9 (next to the Lilly Library) in Florence, MA, hosted by the Valley Free Radio program, Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child.

Brainchild of artist/songwriter/performer Morgan Taylor, Gustafer Yellowgold concerts are a unique blend of live music and moving image, projected in vivid color onto a big screen. The minimally animated illustrations are accompanied by Taylor’s catchy and original story-songs for a truly different multimedia experience that entrances children and adults alike. As always, Morgan Taylor will bring his distinctive brand of humor to the show, as he interacts with his often verbally inquisitive audience.

Gustafer Yellowgold is a friendly creature who came to Earth from the Sun and has an interesting magnetism for making friends with some of Earth’s odder creatures. His best friend is Forrest Applecrumbie. the smartly dressed Pterodactyl, with whom he built a small cottage-style home on the edge of an uncharted wooded area in Minnesota. Gustafer has a pet eel named Slim (short for Slimothy) and a dragon named Asparagus who lives in his fireplace. For recreation, he enjoys punching cheese.

Since his creation in 2005, Gustafer Yellowgold has become an international phenomenon, praised by Newsweek as “full of great pop tunes and hand-drawn animation about a li’l fella from the sun.” The Chicago Tribune enthused, “Gustafer Yellowgold has made kids’ music so cool that teenagers and ultra-hip bands such as Wilco want to get in on the act … A shiny blend of pop art and pop tunes.”

Possessing an unusual crossover appeal, The Gustafer Yellowgold Show has performed as the support act for Wilco and The Polyphonic Spree, as well as headlining kids’ venues all across the U.S., in London, and even in Seoul, Korea! Morgan Taylor’s other projects include playing bass for The Autumn Defense (featuring John and Pat from Wilco), as well as a recording project with Tony Award winning songwriter Duncan Sheik.

(c) Hilltown Families - Gustafer Yellowgold Concert

Gustafer Yellowgold’s Wide Wild World, released in March 2007, is a 2007 NAPPA Gold winner and an official selection of the KIDS FIRST! Film and Video Festival. A second DVD/CD set, Gustafer Yellowgold’s Have You Never Been Yellow?, released in October 2007, is the first-place winner of the 2007 Fids & Kamily Awards, modeled on the Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop Poll.
