Online Resources to Support East Asian Studies

Creating lessons and finding materials to support students’ learning can be easy if you’re working on a popular topic, like the Revolutionary War or simple machines. Finding resources for less commonly studied topics can prove much more difficult, though!

Studies of east Asian culture and history can be particularly difficult to teach, as it is a topic not often included in curriculum guides or textbooks, and even if it is mentioned, it is generally only in high school level materials. However, thanks to the Five College Consortium, educators can find a wealth of easily accessible internet-based resources for teaching and learning about all things fascinating in eastern Asia. The Five Colleges’ website offers a categorized list filled with information-rich links – there’s everything from Asian news websites to web-page activities, travel information to online galleries of east Asian art: Online Resources to Support K-14 East Asian Studies.

The resources are broken down by country, topic, and purpose, and can be used by educators working with kids in grades K-12 (or older!), and homeschoolers of all ages. Some of the resources are best for educators to learn from before planning lessons, while others offer student-friendly formats. Integrating some web-based learning into a unit can not only broaden the scope of learning materials, but it can help students develop basic computer skills while working on a structured project.

Educational opportunities are numerous over the next few months for those interested in teaching and learning about Asian art!  The Smith College Museum of Art in Northampton, MA will be opening a new exhibit on Asian art beginning February 1st through May 26th, 2013.  Titled, Collecting Art of Asia, the exhibit celebrates the 100th anniversary of the museum’s first acquisition of Asian art and includes work from the museum’s permanent collection, as well as promised gifts to the museum.  Work included in the two-floor exhibit comes from China, Japan, Korea, and much of south and southeastern Asia, and highlights significant movements and people in the history of Asian art, as well as significant and historic gifts to the museum’s collection.

Educators can attend a workshop hosted by the museum that will share suggestions for teaching about the interdisciplinary connections found between Asian and Western art objects.  Open to K-12 teachers, the workshop will also include an overview of “Collecting Art of Asia,” and resources for teaching shared by Five College Center for East Asian Studies director Anne Prescott.  The workshop takes place on February 6th from 10am-3pm ($).  Registration required – call 413-585-2781 or e-mail to sign up.

The Smith College Museum of Art welcomes groups of students to visit, and offers guided tours of the museum.  Classes, homeschool groups, and other groups of learners from PreK-12th grade can visit the museum to supplement their studies of Asian art, culture, and history.  Tours can be designed to fit specific needs, or groups can participate in the general tour designed to accompany the exhibit.  Educators can use a visit to the museum to supplement explorations into the history of Asian art, as well as studies of Asian culture and history.

On Saturday, March 2nd from 10am-3pm, Smith College Museum of Art will host a free family day. Billed as “Art of Asia,” families can participate in hands-on projects that were inspired by fishermen, flowers and fireworks, all on view in the Collecting Art of Asia exhibition.  Projects are perfect for families with PreK-12th youth and their guardians.

Finally, at the UMass Fine Arts Center in Amherst will host Chinese Theater Works performing Toy Theater Peony Pavilion as part of the Global Arts: Performances for Schools series.  The performance, open to grades 3-8, will take place at 10am on March 7th, 2013.  The show combines the 16th century Chinese Kun Opera with modern Western styles of puppetry to create a unique and beautiful story, following a young maiden through her dreams.

Studies of Asian art and performance can provide a window through which to examine Asian history and culture, and can help provide students with a critical understanding of the evolution of Asian cultures.  A look at Asian traditions can also help older students put relations between the United States and east Asian countries such as China and Japan into cultural context.  For more information on either the exhibit or the performance, contact the Smith College museum of Arts at 413-585-2781 or the UMass FAC at 413-545-2511.

Older children, teens, and adults have the opportunity to cross the globe, right here in Western Massachusetts. Reinventing Tokyo: Japan’s Largest City in the Artistic Imagination, on view through December 30 at the Mead Art Museum in Amherst, is the first exhibition in the US to approach Tokyo through the lens of the city’s history of continual change and reinvention.  With over 100 prints, photographs, paintings, and textiles, Reinventing Tokyo gives a visual timeline of the Japanese capital’s modernization from Edo to the cutting edge modern Tokyo of today.

Timed to open 100 years after Japan’s gift of cherry blossoms to Washington DC, this exhibition follows major events in recent Japanese history, including the 19th-century “opening” of Japan to Western trade, natural disasters such as fires and earthquakes, and the rapid urbanization after the destruction of World War Two.

One major theme is the contrast between eastern and western cultural influences, evident in the woodblock prints depicting street scenes of people walking side by side, some in kimonos, some in 19th-century Western suits and bonnets.  A traditionally dressed woman walks across a state of the art steel suspension bridge; a baseball player adorns a 1930s kimono; a high fashion gown by famed designer Miyake Issey hints at traditional Japanese clothing yet is unquestioningly modern and futuristic.

As a former classroom geography teacher I recommend Reinventing Tokyo as a resource for students of Japanese culture and globalization.  However, it is the theme of urbanization that is most visually striking.  Tokyo, once the small fishing village of Edo, is now the political, cultural, and economic center of Japan.  The largest urban center in the world with 35 million people, Tokyo illustrates what happens when natural disaster, war, and cultural change alter an urban landscape and the people living within it.

Many large cities have a history as a crossroads, a place where cultures meet for commerce and accidentally share more than goods and services; ideas and values end up mingling as well.  Tokyo has been a crossroads of tradition and modernity for over 150 years.  After centuries of self isolation, Japan allowed itself to “open” to trade with Western nations, especially the United States, in the mid-19th century.   A mixing of culture and technology followed and continues to this day.  From skyscrapers and McDonalds to anime and sushi, the exchange of ideas between Japan and the US crisscrosses the globe.

When Tokyo rebuilt itself after earthquakes, fires, and war, it was the urban architecture popular in the United States and Europe that helped to house quickly the large population.  Yet the new neighborhoods and shopping districts maintained a distinctly Japanese feel and style.  Modern-day Tokyo has the vibrancy of New York yet a sense of place unique to a culture that has thrived in one location for centuries.  It is this ongoing relationship between the past and the future, the result of an amazing resiliency to disaster, that makes Tokyo such a dynamic and important city.

A note to families and teachers: this exhibition includes visual reference to natural disasters, war, and adult sexuality.  Admission to the Mead is always free and parents and teachers are welcome to preview the exhibition.

Five College Center for East Asian Studies

If you’re interested in additional resources, the Five College Center for East Asian Studies (FCCEAS) at Smith College in Northampton has a free newsletter, “East Asia for Teachers,” which compiles cultural activities and educational opportunities in New England and New York of interest to educators who teach about East Asia or families wanting to further supplement their children’s education in East Asia studies. Included in the newsletter are a calendar of museum exhibits and cultural events,  and resources on East Asia, distributed three times a year.  In their most recent newsletter they shared the follow online supplemental curriculums which might be of interest to teachers and homeschoolers:

Cranes by Western MA Kids for Japan

In response to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, a group of children ranging from four to ten have joined together to raise money for relief efforts. They have decided to fold 1,000 paper cranes in the tradition of the Japanese legend that guarantees a wish to anyone who folds 1,000 cranes. All proceeds from the sales of each crane will go to the Red Cross.

Together (along with help with friends and family) they have folded more than 400 cranes in a little over one week. They have begun to place cranes and cups at local shops to collect donations. These shops include: Mt. Tom’s Ice Cream, Easthampton; Manhan Cafe, Easthampton; Shelburne Falls Coffee, Easthampton; Antonio’s Pizza, Easthampton; Silver Spoon, Easthampton; The Williston Northampton School, Easthampton; Northampton Community Music Center, Northampton; Soora, Northampton; Cup and Top Cafe, Florence; Toy Box, Amherst and The Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School, Hadley (where several participating children attend). We hope to have even more locations by next week.

It is understandable to want to send something “real” like supplies, but money in the hands of these organizations can purchase those supplies many times over. At our local level, we can hold concerts, vigils, and other events. And what we should gather is always dollars.
