On the first day of 2020, Hilltown Families and Flywheel are partnering again in the beloved annual New Year’s Day Morning Dance Party, a breakfast bash featuring food, dancing, and diversions for kids held at Flywheel Arts Collective on Wednesday, January 1, from 10am-12noon. New this year, local storyteller, Tom McCabe, will spin a yarn while folks enjoy a community pancake breakfast. After breakfast, families can join DJ Youthelectronix for the “best ever dance party before noon.“. This annual event is a fundraiser to benefit the work of Flywheel Arts Collective. Minimum suggested donation: $6/person. Start the new year with a New Year’s Day Music Dance Party. Save on the babysitter and dance away on the first morning of the new year! Winter Fair! An alternative to traditional holiday buying, this fun and participatory Winter Fair on Dec. 7, 10am-3pm, at the Hilltown Cooperative Charter Public School in Easthampton offers a chance to create homemade gifts and enjoy crafting, musical performances and delicious food! Many crafts use recycled and natural materials – including fairy houses, full-sized wreaths, jewelry, herbal sachets, and more. HCCPS is a public school serving grades K-8 and emphasizing an arts-integrated approach. There is no tuition; admission is by lottery for students in Hampshire and Franklin counties. Pioneer Valley Ballet presents the beloved holiday classic, The Nutcracker! Join Clara as she battles the Rat King to save the Nutcracker Prince, then travel through the enchanted Snow Forest and beautiful Kingdom of Sweets. A myth of the importance of music in our lives is told with the help of magical beasts in the form of puppets. The show includes traditional songs and dances along with new material from Rose Sheehan, Welcome Yule’s founder and Colin De la Barre. Saturday, November 23rd – REVIVE! A Center School Open House and Community Upcycling Event. Join the Center School as they make old things new again. Teachers will be offering fresh, cool, upcycling projects—make a no-sew t-shirt bag, create a key rack using old keys, design felted woolens accessories, build an invention with recycled materials, weave a jump rope from old sheets, and more. All classrooms will be open, and teachers will be on hand. Explore the campus, buy a sweet, warm or savory snack in their pop-up cafe, meet current students and parents, and see what the Center School is all about. Join them from 10am-2pm. All welcome! On Friday, November 29th, the New England Air Museum will host jolly St. Nick! Come and have a “Selfie with Santa” aboard a Sikorsky Seaguard helicopter between 11am and 12noon. Santa is not coming empty-handed – his bag will be filled with a special gift for each child. Also, the museum will be conducting its popular “Behind the Scenes” Tour, which allows visitors to take a close-up look at some of the current restoration projects, including the wide-bodied Burnelli CBY-3 Loadmaster, Kaman HOK-1 helicopter, some vintage engines, and more. Teachers will be offering fresh, cool, upcycling projects—make a no-sew t-shirt bag, create a key rack using old keys, design felted woolens accessories, build an invention with recycled materials, weave a jump rope from old sheets, and more. All classrooms will be open, and teachers will be on hand. On Saturday, October 26, the New England Air Museum will host a Haunted Hangars Trick or Treat event from 10am-3pm. Ghosts, Witches, Princesses, and Superheroes are invited to tour the museum and collect a treat when they sit in the pilot’s seat of our “spooky themed” historic aircraft. A costume contest will be held where the winning Trick or Treater will receive a free family membership to the museum. Both children and adults are welcome for this kid-friendly, un-scary event. Visitors will also have the chance to climb aboard historic aircraft, plus receive Halloween treats. Other activities include flight simulators and the opportunity to construct your own flying machine during the Build and Fly activity. More information at www.NEAM.org.

Join Friends of Children on Friday, November 1, 6-9pm for FOCUS On The Arts, an event celebrating the arts and supporting Friends of Children’s FOCUS program, bringing essential resources to young adults in MA who have aged out of foster care. Ghouls and Goblins beware! The Look Park Haunted Train has returned for more rides of lightly frightful fun! The fun starts at 5pm and the frights stop at 9pm. The first hour is the calm and the monsters do not chase after the train, best suited for kids who may be most likely to be scared. As the night progresses the creatures begin to run after the train and pop out of the dark! Best for ages 5 and up but all ages are welcome! There is no fee to enter the park, just pay for tickets for your ride. Ages 12 and up $5. Ages 2-11: $4. 2 and under: Free. Friday to Sunday October 25-27. Skate with the Skating Club of Amherst, the oldest figure skating club in Western MA. They are offering professional instruction at all levels, beginner to advanced. Basic Skills group lessons for ages 4 to adult are offered September to June on Sundays from 5:50-6:30pm at UMass-Amherst Mullins Center practice rink in Amherst. Additional instruction in free-skate, moves in the field, and ice dance for skaters interested in competing and testing. Berkshire Scenic Railway’s Spirit Trains will be departing North Adams for a lantern-lit walk through Southview Cemetery with psychic medium Julie MacDonald on October 19th & 26th. The Common School will hold its annual Children’s Carnival, open to the wider Pioneer Valley community, on Saturday, October 19, from 10am-2pm, on the school’s campus at 521 South Pleasant Street in Amherst, MA. Open to the community, the Children’s Carnival will offer old-fashioned activities, games, and entertainment, including a bounce house and live music. Admission to the carnival is free. Sense of Place: Life Reflections Through the Seasons” an autumn writing workshop series with Hilltown Families founder, Sienna Wildfield. Understanding how we are a part of our changing landscape year after year as we move through the seasons strengthens our sense of place. Our experiences of autumn in New England as a child, teenager, young adult, parent, and grandparent are very different. Connecting our stages of life experiences through the seasons give us a better understanding of who we are in relation to where we are in the world. The second annual Arcadia Folk Festival returns on September 28th with Dar Williams, Anaïs Mitchell, Martin Sexton, and many more! The Living Rivers School brings students onto the river & into the conservation biology research of Dr. Boyd Kynard, who is renowned for saving our CT River shortnose sturgeon. For aspiring scientists and activists who love nature and are devoted to taking care of it, Living Rivers provides a rare opportunity to assist Dr. Kynard and get a behind-the-scenes view of how data is collected, analyzed and used to reach conclusions. Activities include collecting data in the CT River with boats, fins, and snorkels, lab work and data processing—physical, mental, social, high-energy fun. Celebrate “All Things Local & Agricultural” with nearly 100 vendors and community partners. PBS Kids’ Curious George will be on hand along with The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Kid-friendly band In the Nick of Time goes on stage at noon, followed by folk-, bluegrass-, and blues-inspired acts. Food trucks and local brewers will keep the whole family well fed. Kids Golf Clinics. Worthington, MA ♦ The Links at Worthington will be hosting a free series of Junior Golf Clinics at their course in Worthington from Jun 18-Aug 13. Francis Kringle, their PGA Professional, will instruct classes in the basics of golf, progressing through the program to more advanced techniques and the rules of the game. All playing levels are welcome. Clubs will be provided for those that need them. The program will conclude with a “Fun Tournament” on Aug 13. They ran this program for the first time in 2018, and it was a smashing success!
