Nov. 18

Interested in starting a Girls on the Run program at your school? Girls on the Run is now accepting applications for new sites for our spring season. Come check out what Girls on the Run is all about at our Fall 5k, taking place at Smith College on November 18th at 10:30am! Our 5k is unlike anything else. Upon arrival, you will be swept away by the excitement in the air. Colored hair spray, facepaint, joy and positivity can be seen and felt before the celebratory run even begins. This fall we will be hosting over 500 girls, their running buddies, families and many community members. Come and run, feel inspired and take home a smile you will wear from ear to ear the rest of the day! Register and learn more about the 5k at: www.girlsontherunwesternma.org.

The Milltown Artisan Fair on Sunday, November 11 from 11-5 at Eastworks (116 Pleasant Street, Easthampton) features a juried selection of fine handmade goods by twenty local artists and makers. Jewelry, ceramics, home decor and furnishings in various media, original art and prints, mixed media assemblage, textile art, ornaments, photographs, fashion accessories for children, adults and pets, and more. The Holiday Fair at The Hartsbrook School: a seasonal celebration and long-time family favorite in the Valley! Toddler Story Time at The Common School: Looking for a cozy morning activity for your toddler? Look no further! The Common School will be holding a free Toddler Story Time filled with books, songs, finger plays and a simple snack for children ages 14 months to 3 years. This event will take place once a month with their librarian, JennyKate Marble. This series begins November 8 and continues through May on the first Thursday of every month (note it is the second Thursday in November and January due to school closings). Meet at The Common School library, 521 South Pleasant Street, Amherst, from 9:30-10:30 AM. Please contact Dana Kadish, Director of Admissions, at outreach@commonschool.org with any questions.

WGBY Kids Fan Day at the Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. puts popular educational TV programming front-and-center with a full day of activities. With over a dozen education-focused community organizations — not to mention live PBS KIDS characters Daniel Tiger, Curious George, and The Cat in the Hat — public television station WGBY is hosting a PBS KIDS fan fair that showcases award winning educational content and provides a family-friendly day of creativity and fun. You’ll enjoy live kids’ music, animals, delectable treats courtesy of local partners, sessions with children’s authors, and creativity stations. The Bement School founded in 1925 and located in Deerfield is a co-educational junior boarding and day school serving 225 students in kindergarten through grade 9. Take part in the 47th Annual Fall Foliage Celebration and 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, October 20th , 9:30am – 1pm on the Amherst Town Common. This will be a family event with lots of great entertainment including FREE face painting, hayrides, dancing and drumming, local hip hop and more. The 5K includes beautiful vistas during peak foliage! The Amherst A Better Chance program has been in Amherst for nearly 50 years and has changed the lives of over 125 high schoolers. Saturdoozy!! An Art Themed Kids Night Out in Noho! October 20th and November 17th. Fun, safe, and supervised, SATURDOOZY, welcomes children ages 7 and up, and will feature a DJ, dancing, games, ping-pong, arts and crafts, karaoke, face-painting, pizza, snacks and a movie to top the night! An added plus, parents can also opt for a “VALET SERVICE” – supervised curbside pick-up, so you don’t have to worry about parking! Celebrate the Valley’s farms, food, and friends with Kestrel Land Trust’s special 10th Annual 5K for Farmland & Farmers’ Market Festival! Sunday, October 21, 11 a.m. – 2 pm on the West St. Common, Hadley. Family-friendly 5K race on a flat route through scenic farmland or a beautiful 2-mile riverside walk. Farmers’ Market Festival after the race with music by “The Empty Bottle Ramblers,” local food, products and crafts, plus a live Birds of Prey demo with Tom Ricardi. Henry the Juggler will be there, courtesy of Hadley Cultural Council. For the adults, free local beer by Valley Malt for registered participants age 21+. Get a special edition pint glass and be entered into a drawing for great prizes when you register at 5kforfarmland.org.

Join The Common School for their annual Children’s Carnival on Saturday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on their school’s beautiful campus at 521 South Pleasant Street in Amherst. The Carnival is open to the public, with no admission fee. Many activities, such as a bounce house and games will be available for a small fee. Breakfast, hearty lunches and treats, such as, cotton candy, homemade baked goods and smoothies will also be available for purchase. In the event of rain, The Carnival will be held indoors at The Amherst Regional Middle School at 170 Chestnut Street. For more information, call 413-256-8989 or go to www.commonschool.org.

OnTrend Crafts is hosting its 5th annual Fall Craft Fair on Saturday, October 13 on the beautiful Hadley Town Commons. More than 60 of the region’s top indie crafters will be in Hadley selling their high-quality handmade goods. Shoppers will find handcrafted jewelry, home decor, paper goods, ceramics, body care products, knitted apparel, and much more. Locally sourced and made eats include tacos, ice cream, cake pops and more. Come support our talented local artisans! Free admission; rain or shine. The Bement School is pleased to host the Pioneer Valley Independent School Fair on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Kittredge Building. Twenty-five independent schools from the Pioneer Valley area participating represent pre-school through grade 12 and post graduate. Information sessions on topics such as how to apply for financial aid, finding the right match, and advice on applying to schools will take place from 5-6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Oct 5 – 28

Connecticut Trolley Museum will hold their popular Pumpkin Patch event starting Oct 5th and will run the rest of the month every Fri, Sat & Sun including Monday, Oct 8th for Columbus Day. Pumpkin Patch is a family fun filled adventure where you ride on a trolley car out to the pumpkin patch field and each child can pick out a FREE pumpkin. Additionally, when you return back to the Museum you can decorate the pumpkins, get your face painted (Fri & Sat) & enjoy the outside play area with SPOOKTACULAR Halloween activities. Don’t forget you can take as many Trolley rides as you would like. Visit www.ct-trolley.org for hours of operation. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors, $10 for youth (ages 4-12) and $3 for children (under age 3).

The New England Air Museum will hold an Open Cockpit Day on Saturday, October 6, from 10am to 4pm. Special activities will include Touch A Truck, designed for children of all ages to view some very large vehicles-up close – from the following industries: aviation, construction, 1st responders and the military, along with the chance to climb aboard historic aircraft including a WWII P-47 Thunderbolt, a jet-age F-100 Super Sabre and a F-104 Star-fighter, as well as number of helicopters. Other activities include hands on flight simulators and the opportunity to Build & Fly your own flying machine! Food and beverage will be available, and all activities are included with museum admission. Rubber-soled shoes recommended. www.neam.org.

Bulletin Board

Oct 5 – 28

Connecticut Trolley Museum will hold their popular Pumpkin Patch event starting Oct 5th and will run the rest of the month every Fri, Sat & Sun including Monday, Oct 8th for Columbus Day. Pumpkin Patch is a family fun filled adventure where you ride on a trolley car out to the pumpkin patch field and each child can pick out a FREE pumpkin. Additionally, when you return back to the Museum you can decorate the pumpkins, get your face painted (Fri & Sat) & enjoy the outside play area with SPOOKTACULAR Halloween activities. Don’t forget you can take as many Trolley rides as you would like. Visit www.ct-trolley.org for hours of operation. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors, $10 for youth (ages 4-12) and $3 for children (under age 3).

Sept 29 & 30

The 20th Anniversary of the North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival is September 29 and 30, 10am to 5PM in Orange MA. There’s something for everyone at this fabulous family destination. Over 100 booths are vibrant with local artists, farmers, fabulous food, chef demos and skills for local living. Enjoy amazing music, performance, spoken word and dance on three stages. Ample activities for all ages, all weekend. Only $5.00 ($8 weekend pass) adults, kids 12 and under free! Sept. 30

Sukkot Harvest Festival at Abundance Farm! Sun. Sept. 30th from 10 AM-2 PM at 253 Prospect St., Northampton, MA. Come celebrate the harvest with apple cider pressing, cob oven baking, live music, harvest games, nature-based arts and crafts, food and drinks, tea making, seed saving activities, and much more! Oct. 6

The New England Air Museum will hold an Open Cockpit Day on Saturday, October 6, from 10am to 4pm. Special activities will include Touch A Truck, designed for children of all ages to view some very large vehicles-up close – from the following industries: aviation, construction, 1st responders and the military, along with the chance to climb aboard historic aircraft including a WWII P-47 Thunderbolt, a jet-age F-100 Super Sabre and a F-104 Star-fighter, as well as number of helicopters. Other activities include hands on flight simulators and the opportunity to Build & Fly your own flying machine! Food and beverage will be available, and all activities are included with museum admission. Rubber-soled shoes recommended. www.neam.org.

Stoneleigh-Burnham School offers Community Dance programs for all children ages 5-18 from Sept. 26, 2018 to May 22, 2019. Director Cat Wagner offers quality creative movement, ballet, and contemporary classes in a nurturing environment. Students build confidence and a sense of well-being through dance. The program’s foundation is on robust skill development, but also brings dance alive using a collaboration. Students build trust, community, and new perspectives. Classes are limited to 15 students and take place in the school’s dance studio in Greenfield. The program ends with a full-length collaborative piece with SBS students at a Spring Dance Concert. Sept. 23

The Hitchcock Center for the Environment invites the community to Pollination Celebration Day, Sunday, September 23rd from 11am to 3pm. Come and celebrate the pollinators in our world — bees, caterpillars, monarchs and more! Activities for the whole family include: building bee hotels, tagging monarchs, gardening workshops, face painting, the Caterpillar Lab from Keene, NH, pollinator parade and obstacle course, crafts, and treats from Crooked Stick Pops. Piti Theatre Youth Troupe Fall Session: Greenfield’s Grumpiest T-Rex to be performed for the Great Greenfield DinoFest on October 6th at Hawks and Reed Performing Arts Center. The troupe will perform again in December. Bulletin Board

Sept. 15 & 16

The Valley’s hottest farm festival is back! Kitchen Garden Farm’s annual Chilifest is a celebration of hot peppers and all things spicy on Saturday, Sept. 15 and Sunday, Sept. 16 from noon-5pm at Mike’s Maze in Sunderland. Enjoy great live music, local brews and spicy food all weekend long! Try some of the world’s hottest peppers grown right here in Sunderland. Taste and vote in the Chili Cook-Off Saturday and Hot Sauce Competition Sunday, and check out the new Hot Sauce Alley featuring local hot sauce makers. Plus, chef demos, DIY pickles and screen printing, chili crowns and pepper pops, and fun for all ages. Tickets and the full schedule of events at kitchengardenfarm.com/chilifest.

The Dhira Yoga Center will be offering an 8 class series of yoga classes, for kids ages 9-16, on Tuesdays from 4-5 pm, September 18 through November 6. The cost for the 8 week session is $80. Kids build confidence playing with the yoga poses, chilling out in shavasana and learning tips for quieting the mind. The teacher, Beki, has a playful spirit and extensive experience teaching yoga to kids. Lots of healthy fun. The Dhira Yoga Center is located at 617 College Highway in Southwick. Sept. 20

The Celebrate Amherst Block Party returns for the 7thyear! September 20, 2018 5 – 9 pm on North Pleasant Street in downtown Amherst. Show Circus returns with acrobats on the high wire and on the ground. Two stages frame either end of the party with live music, performances, and a great DJ spinning tunes and providing time for impromptu karaoke. DJs, cafes, and restaurants set up on the street serving affordable, delicious foods – Thai, Tibetan, Mediterranean, Indian to delicious burgers and slices of pizza! The Movement Observation in Children and Adolescents (MOCA) study is a research study to improve how we measure physical activity using wearable sensors. Participation is Easy! All you have to do is live your normal life while you wear two small activity trackers and we record you using a video camera. Our research staff will come to you and work around your schedule. Anyone from 1.5-17 years old can participate. All you have to do is complete four 1-hour sessions. Receive a $20 Target Gift Card for participating. Join Pioneer Valley Ballet for its Fall Session, September 10-December 1. PVB offers an 11-week ballet training program for ages 4+. A Beginner Modern class for ages 9-15 will also be offered, and Adult Ballet is held Sunday evenings. Visit www.pioneervalleyballet.org to register. The Movement Observation in Children and Adolescents (MOCA) study is a research study to improve how we measure physical activity using wearable sensors. Participation is Easy! All you have to do is live your normal life while you wear two small activity trackers and we record you using a video camera. Our research staff will come to you and work around your schedule. Anyone from 1.5-17 years old can participate. All you have to do is complete four 1-hour sessions. Receive a $20 Target Gift Card for participating. Intergenerational Music and Dance is a group that celebrates the joy of music and dance for all generations. Participants will engage in choral singing, folk dancing, singing games, music literacy activities, and plenty of laughter and joy. Choral literature will be selected from a variety of genres and cultures. We will learn folk dances and play singing games to foster community and engage in musical play. No prior music experience is necessary. For children (ages 6+) with a participating adult or adults alone. Mondays 6:00 – 7:00 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Amherst. Hilltown Families and Mass Appeal (a weekday, hour-long lifestyle program on NBC) have teamed up to offer a live monthly segment on WWLP 22News!  Each month, community-based education specialist and Hilltown Families’ Founder, Sienna Wildfield, joins Mass Appeal hosts to talk about ways to engage in your community while supporting the interests and education of your children (and yourselves!).

This monthly segment continued on Monday, August 27, 2018 with Sienna and Danny talking about late summer resources and opportunities that support learning through community-based education.

Piti Theatre Youth Troupe Fall Session: Greenfield’s Grumpiest T-Rex to be performed for the Great Greenfield DinoFest on October 6th at Hawks and Reed Performing Arts Center. The troupe will perform again in December. Performers ages 8 and up learn improvisation, magic, singing, movement, acting and puppetry skills while developing their capacities for trust, confidence, teamwork and creativity! “We loved watching the show; our children loved being part of it.” – C.W., Shelburne Falls Rehearsals on Thursdays, 4:00 – 5:15 and some Saturday mornings, 10 – noon in Shelburne Falls and Greenfield. Sept. 30

The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts’ annual Will Bike 4 Food charity cycling event is returning for its eight year on Sunday, September 30, in Hatfield. You can pedal towards a hunger-free community by riding in this fun event as an individual or forming a team with your friends, family and coworkers. With 4 routes to choose from (10, 25, 50 or 100 miles), riders of all ages can get involved. There’ll be music, food, beverages, games and more. Last year’s event raised $130,000 to help feed our neighbors in need. You can make this year’s event even more successful. Early bird registration pricing ends August 31. At Joy Art Space students experience the joy of creating art while developing new skills and finding their unique artistic voice! Joy Art Space offers private art lessons and small group classes for children, teens, and adults in painting, drawing, sculpture, and more! Students learn art techniques in a warm, supportive environment. Classes for all experience levels, beginner to advanced! Art teacher Lily Joy Friedling has taught privately and in schools for 10 years, and has an M.A. in Art Education from Columbia University. Located right in downtown Amherst on N. Pleasant Street. Amherst Leisure Services Community Theater (ALSCT) is holding auditions for their upcoming January 2019 production of Peter Pan. Audition appointments can be made starting August 1 by calling Amherst Leisure Services at 413-259-3065. Auditions are September 14-16 (callbacks September 17) at the Bangs Community Center in Amherst. People of all performing experience levels, genders, and racial and ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to audition. Children (at least 7 years old and in 2nd grade or higher), teens, and adults are welcome. More information about auditions — including character descriptions, audition music and readings, and downloadable audition forms — is available at www.alsct.org. Sept 17 – Dec 10

Chad Stewart, former Disney animator and veteran home school Dad, offers a 12 week LIVE – online Animation Course for ages 11-18. He also teaches 2 online Drawing Classes as well. Each assignment, whether completed in hand-drawn or computer animation, is given a professional review with feedback for the individual learning of each student! We are taking registrations for our 2018 Fall Session (September 17-December 10)! Classes tend to fill up very quickly, so we encourage families to hold their child’s spot with a $50 registration fee. We have live spots and recorded classes, so there are options available for many different needs. Our live and recorded classes – with grading – are $350.
